Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen Officially Join the Sequel to X-Men: First Class

There’s only one thing that can make me feel bad about Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart sharing a screen again, and that is that X-Men III is officially still canon.

From the mouth of Bryan Singer himself:

Yes, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy will likely also be in the movies, due to the time travely nature of the original X-Men comics plot that goes by the same name as the sequel film: Days of Future Past. In it, two timelines are spawned by the crux of a single battle: one in which the main characters of the X-Men series existed, and another where enormous robotic Sentinels roamed America seeking to destroy mutants or throw them into internment camps.

Perhaps future Professor and past Professor will have some common ground in one of their mutual acquaintances. Maybe they’ll explain why the Professor acts like he’s never seen him or Mystique, his adopted sister, before in the first X-Men movie. Because, seriously, X-Men franchise, you need to work this out.

    Isn’t First Class a reboot of the series? I figure they were pulling an alternate universe thing, because that’s the only way any of it makes sense. As far as I am concerned, the first content in the first 3 movies didn’t happen. I do figure that we will be seeing more X-Men and Spider man reboots in the future if FOX and Sony want to hold onto their movie licences.

    X-Men 3 isn’t canon. If it were, then old/bald Charles would still.be able to walk. He was paralyzed at the end of First Class, but he is walking with McKellen in X3 when they first meet Jean.

    I don’t think First Class was a reboot, no. It certainly wasn’t marketed as one. They used footage of McKellen and Stewart from the original trilogy in the promos and used all sorts of “See how the story began!” taglines.

    Well that and the Hugh Jackman cameo.

    I don’t see anything in Singer’s tweet suggesting that X3 is still canon. Especially considering Xavier lost his Patrick Stewart body in that film and got stuck in that dude Moira was watching.

    In order for me to fit things into perspective I personally think of it as a reboot. Also, you aren’t going to unsaddle those actors. That would be be rage inducing in the fanbois, but for myself when I think of Mystique I think of Rebecca Romijn. But to be honest, I don’t think FOX really cares about continuity anyways.

    As soon as I heard the name of the next movie, I had high hopes that the events of DoFP would retcon X3 out of existence, and bring the movies into some type continuity. This hope looks more like reality every time I hear some news about it.

    Do Xavier and Mystique have any scenes together is the original series? Other than just standing in the same room, not talking? Cuz that’s how I act with family members I used to care deeply about, but have a hard time reconciling that with their life’s choices.

    Continuity errors and the X-Books have gone hand in hand since the 80′s. To have a perfect timeline would be unUncanny-like.
