Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada’s Painkiller Jane is no stranger to film adaptation. The character enjoyed her own made-for-TV movie in the mid-00s that lead to a short-lived television series. But now she may see another life on the big screen from horror directors the Soska Sisters.

Painkiller Jane, neé Jane Vasko, was an undercover cop investigating an organized crime family until, in a dangerous situation, her powerful ability to regenerate from injuries was revealed. Forced to fake her death, she becomes a near-indestructible vigilante. Emmanuelle Vaugier and Kristanna Loken have both portrayed Jane, in the TV movie and Syfy Television series, respectively. Seeing as how the series ended in 2007, it’s likely that the production will be looking to start fresh. And with the Soska Sisters directing, it’ll probably be a real wild ride.

The Soska twins, Jen and Sylvia, broke into films with their first effort, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, but it was their follow-up, American Mary, with its female themes and strong reviews, that garnered the duo a cult following. The pair recently wrapped Vendetta for WWE Studios and Lionsgate, and their See No Evil 2 is slated to be released later this year.

The Soska sisters seem to be no strangers to dialing up live-action violence to cartoonishly gruesome heights, nor to examining the way society over-values, under-values, and demands to alter or harm women’s bodies. That could be real interesting when combined with a female character who can take an axe to the spine or a shotgun to the face and then get up with a sneer to put the boot to the badguys. Palmiotti and Stephen L’Heureux are producing under their companies Paperfilms and Solipsist Films, hoping to put together a little indie action thriller.
