(98 comments) Last January Virginia State Senator Janet Howell became our hero when she proposed an amendment that would require men to undergo a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before obtaining a prescription for erectile dysfunction medication. What was the bill Howell’s amendment was attached to? One forcing women who want to have an abortion to have a vaginal sonogram and be “given the opportunity” to look at the fetus first. Howell’s amendment didn’t pass—she never expected it to—but it still got our readers talking. In a sad postscript, a revised version of the original bill was voted into law in February.
