Virginia State Senator Janet Howell Suggests a Rectal Exam Amendment to a Horrible Abortion Bill

(98 comments) Last January Virginia State Senator Janet Howell became our hero when she proposed an amendment that would require men to undergo a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before obtaining a prescription for erectile dysfunction medication. What was the bill Howell’s amendment was attached to? One forcing women who want to have an abortion to have a vaginal sonogram and be “given the opportunity” to look at the fetus first. Howell’s amendment didn’t pass—she never expected it to—but it still got our readers talking. In a sad postscript, a revised version of the original bill was voted into law in February.

    Note that the peaceful resolution to the James Gunn story got about a third as many comments than the initial firestorm. This is rather common.

    I honestly expected the Mass Effect ending story to make the list. Perhaps it’s because that was spread out over several articles.
    I find it interesting that eight out of ten of the stories are more about social issues, both in and out of fandom, as opposed to actual news items about events in comics of film. That’s a reflection of the site as a whole – more keen and willing to address issues, and get into relatively sane and polite discussions about same. A lot of talk about sexism (the fake geek girl articles being a big example) and pretty much valid arguments as well.
    In short, a more thought-provoking site, and less trolling than one would expect.
    These are good things.

    Thanks for posting this! I’m relatively new to this site, so I hadn’t seen all these articles. The anime one is especially helpful, as I’ve watched several animes I’ve really liked with my husband but we don’t really know where to go from here. “Rideback” is definitely on my Instant Queue now!

    “Twilight is badly written and harmful, but that’s no reason to treat Twilight fans like they’re idiots.”

    I’m going to explain this yet again: if someone likes fiction that romanticizes and glorifies abusive relationships, that certainly IS a good reason to treat that person like they’re an idiot. They ARE an idiot–at best. At worst, they’re someone who actively enjoys seeing women being treated like garbage.

    “They like something you don’t, and that’s never a good reason to be a jerk to (or about) someone.”

    This is not just a matter of them liking a thing I don’t. AGAIN: if a person enjoys seeing women being physically, emotionally, and sexually abused that is a VERY good reason to be a jerk to them.

    Stop defending this garbage. Stop defending the people who enjoy it. Just STOP.
