Mojang to Host Mojam This Weekend, Create Crowdsourced Game In 60 Hours for Charity

Mojang, the rising game-company superstar behind Minecraft, is teaming up with Humble Bundle this weekend for a nifty little event called Mojam. Starting February 17th at 10 CET, Mojang is going to blitz-code an entire new game in 60 hours, live-streaming the whole shebang for your amusement. Following its completion, the game will go on sale at HumbleBundle.com, with all the profits going to charity. If all that wasn’t enough, you can also vote to pick the game’s genre.

If you hop over to the Mojang blog, you’ll see there are two polls where you can vote on both genre and theme. The variety is pretty promising. They might end up making anything from a WWII FPS to a Steampunk Peter Molyneux, Peter Molyneux being a genre in this case. I personally can’t decide between a post-apocalyptic dating sim or a Candy Land RTS, but I’m sure whatever it is will turn out to be interesting if nothing else. They’re not only selecting the winner from each category either; they’ll also be taking the losers and stirring that in too. The example they give is a “Shoot Em’Up Dating Simulator with a Candy Land World War II theme.” I am so down with that.

On top of the coding and the streaming, Mojang will also be performing some antics to spice up the live stream. What exactly those antics will entail is unclear at the moment, but it’ll probably be worth checking in on at least. All in all, Mojam sounds pretty epic, and I hope this is the first of many. It’s great to see Mojang really putting itself out there and being crazy, making use of their funds and notoriety like a 12-year-old kid that just won the lotto. This is exactly the kind of spice the games industry could always use.

Be sure to hop over to the polls and vote so when that Egyptian steampunk FPS beat ’em up comes out, you can take pride in knowing you contributed to its staggering insanity.
