Yesterday afternoon, Frank Miller announced on Twitter that he would be returning to Gotham to close out The Dark Knight Returns trilogy with this last installment, dubbed The Dark Knight III: The Master Race.
The fan reaction to Miller’s return has been fairly mixed. Given Miller’s terrible, one-dimensional handling of many female characters, it’s not hard to see that people have a right to be worried. But somehow, people are excited, perhaps mostly to see an end to the trilogy that started way back in 1986.
In a press release published on DCComics.com, Miller said:
“Batman remains my favorite comic book hero and a sequel to Dark Knight is going to be daunting, but we’ll do our best.”
As a bit of a silver lining, Miller is being joined by Brian Azzarello, whose work with Cliff Chiang on Wonder Woman is (arguably) the definitive Wonder Woman story. It is with no small hope that maybe Azzarello can balance out the volatile, polarizing Miller. In the same press release on DCComics.com, Azzarello spoke about working with Miller.
“It’s been an amazing experience collaborating with Frank these past six months. I think we have an epic story that these characters truly deserve.”
Here’s hoping for the best.
