Tyler James Williams Talks Miles Morales and the Lack of Young, Black Superheroes; Confirms Jaden Smith to Play Static Shock

"It's about time. I would love to see it now, but I would hate to see it not done right."

Today in “we could have had it all” news, The Walking Dead and Everybody Hates Chris star Tyler James Williams has said he’s read for Marvel and would “absolutely love” to play Spider-Man.

During a recent Flicks and the City interview, Williams addressed the lack of “young, black superheroes” and thanked fans for launching campaigns for him to play Spider-Man, saying

I kind of follow the Miles Morales character quite a bit. And I’m open to the idea, I am. I’m not starting campaigns or anything for it because I trust Marvel. I’ve read for them before. So I trust what their decisions will be. But yeah, I’d love to do it. I would absolutely love to do it.

Tragically, Marvel has confirmed that the Spider-Man movie slated for 2017 will feature Peter Parker; Asa Butterfield is rumored to have been cast (sighs for a million years).

In response to the actor’s comments about lack of representation for young black men, an audience member shouted “Static Shock,” to which Williams replied “it’s great to see Static Shock is happening with Jaden.” So I guess Warner Bros.’ digital Static Shock series (and Jaden Smith’s casting) is officially-official now? Awesome!

Williams went on to say that he’d be open to taking a turn as a character “who’s ethnically ambiguous, force that on it’s head and force people to see things in a different light.”

I definitely recommend checking out the full interview to hear Williams’ thoughts on Black Panther, representation, and the qualities an actor would need to have to do Morales justice.

What do you think, gang? Excited for Jaden as Static Shock? Think we’ll see any developments on the Miles Morales movie front in the next few years?
