Matt Smith Talks the Best Things About Terminator (Sarah Connor) and More About Genisys

With the release of the next Terminator installment only a week away, Matt Smith’s character seems to be one of the only closely-guarded (unless you really, really want to know) secrets left—seemingly the largest twist in the movie has already been given up for free in trailers. Smith isn’t able to say much about himself in Terminator Genisys, but he can speculate on what makes the franchise so great: Sarah Connor.

We’ve made no secret of being excited to see Genisys retcon Connor into a stronger character from the outset, and on a set visit, Smith mentioned to Den of Geek—amid some goofy teases about his own role—that her character is definitely seen as one of the strong points of the series. When asked what about the past films he tried to pick up on and what was better left to the past, Smith said (emphasis ours),

[W]ith any story that you inherit, you have to honour the legacy in some ways. I think that’s one of the great virtues of this script, is that characters like the T-800 and Sarah and Kyle are back in full force, and actually, as much as we loved those first movies, I think the first was made for $8m and the second was made for $100m. But actually, what we loved was Sarah Connor.

Being a time travel property, Terminator Genisys has the luxury of being a reboot and continuation of the story at the same time, which definitely allows a unique opportunity to go back and play up aspects of characters that fans came to love in the original story—like Sarah Connor’s burgeoning badassitude.

Of course, they also tried to get Smith to talk about his role in the movie, and while he did say that he’ll be back for (the inevitable) parts two and three, he channelled his inner Doctor when asked who he actually is in the movie:

Who am I? Well, my name is Matt. And I’m very excited to be a part of the new Terminator franchise. Obviously, I can’t talk in too much detail about the specifics of my character, but needless to say I have close interest and links to John Connor. So yeah. What else do you want to know? I love football!

So there you have it.

Waiting patiently until he can talk about his character.
