Does Tony Stark not have enough beautiful redheads around? In the All-New, All-Different Invincible Iron Man, writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Marquez are having Spider-Man’s Mary Jane Watson join Team Iron Man.
So why the new addition? Apparently, during the Marvel writer’s retreat this year, Bendis was struck by the fact that no one had any plans for Mary Jane in the new Marvel Universe, and when he thought about it, he realized that she would be the perfect character to incorporate into his existing plans for Iron Man. According to Comic Book Resources, Bendis had this to say about the decision:
They know each other. She used to live in Avengers Tower. But that’s all I’m going to say for now because what kind of relationship they end up having is a big part of what I would like people to buy the book for. But what I can tell you is that it is new territory for both Tony and Mary Jane. And that is pretty exciting to write.
I sat with that for a while and I always go to this place in my head where I [wonder] what the most interesting thing I would like to see that character do now and it fell right into the ideas I was already cooking for Tony Stark.
Well, from the sound of it, it looks like there might actually be some interesting stuff being cooked up for Mary Jane, which makes me very happy. Too often, I feel like that character is only viewed in relation to her romantic relationship with Spider-Man/Peter Parker. I hope that with this new addition, Bendis will be allowing the character to shine for her other merits – and that there won’t be any kind of sexual tension between her and Tony, because ick. And lastly, I hope that when she arrives, Pepper gives her a huge high five when welcoming her into the fold.
Invincible Iron Man debuts in October, and Mary Jane will be joining Stark’s team in issue #4, which will be released in December.
