Mad Max: Fury Road Prequel Reported To Be Happening

But currently, it's still just a rumor.

When it comes to rumors of a Mad Max: Fury Road sequel–they live, they die, they live again. The internet has been clamoring for word on whether or not there’s going to be a follow-up–and over the last few months, we’ve been getting some conflicting answers. First, director George Miller broke our hearts by saying that there won’t be a Furiosa standalone film for a while–but when it comes to the actress behind the character, Charlize Theron said she’d be up for making a sequel if one is ever in the works.

As it happens, it might not be a Fury Road sequel in the works–but a prequel. The Australian Herald-Sun is reporting that pre-production is starting on a Fury Road prequel movie, with filming scheduled to potentially begin later this year:

The prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road starring TOM HARDY will be filmed in and around Broken Hill. Pre-production is gearing up on the multi-million-dollar action-packed Warner Bros franchise, with NSW’s Broken Hill Studios Miller’s first choice for shooting, which could start as soon as later this year. Mad Max 4 was plagued by delays when extended rain turned the desert green and the uber director had to move location to Namibia. The script is said to focus on the backstory of Furiosa, played by Oscar winner CHARLIZE THERON.

Given that Fury Road‘s shooting location had to be shifted when that rain turned the desert into a lush landscape that didn’t work for the post-apocalyptic setting, it does make sense that they would be returning in order to shoot a prequel–especially since we know that Furiosa’s backstory involves her coming from the idyllic Green Place.

However, we still don’t have official confirmation from Warner Bros., George Miller or Charlize Theron as of now–so best to take this news with a grain of salt, or several.
