Okay, let’s all just take a moment to catch our breath. You’re probably reading this thinking, “Is this a joke? Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?” Well, it’s no joke, people. Nintendo’s officially announced that they’re releasing a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, one of the most beloved video games of all time. It’s kind of a big deal.
This all comes straight from Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, at the end of this morning’s Nintendo Direct. The briefing, which lasted a total of 37 minutes, focused on the various games and sundries that Nintendo’s rolling off the production line — specifically to North America — in order to generate more buzz for the Nintendo 3DS.
But it wasn’t until the final two minutes or so that things got good. That’s when Fils-Aime popped up with a final reveal: A sequel to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Like, I know I’m just recapping what happened in the video, but it’s exciting enough to make my mind a jumble. It’s almost traumatic; I’m reliving the moment over and over again to try and find some way to deal with the reality I now live within.

Details are still pretty light, but the new game will exist within the same world as Link to the Past. It’ll have a top-down perspective, much like older titles, but Nintendo intends to use the 3D capabilities to allow for mechanics like jumping between layers in a given level. “Also in this game, Link can become a drawing, and move between walls,” said Fils-Aime. So, yeah, that’s a thing too.
The title will feature an all-new story, so it’s hard to say exactly how it’ll be a sequel beyond the fact that they say it is. Either way, we’re all getting a sequel to one of the best Zelda titles out there, and it’s coming Holiday 2013. It’s hard to be anything but tentatively excited about that.
