This Music Video Calls Out Lazy Steampunk Offenders

Gluing some gears on it does not a steampunk make. One Sir Reginald Pikedevant, Esquire takes serious issue with those too lazy to really know what steampunk is and wrote a little ditty about it. He says the song is “Inspired by the category “Things That Are Not Steampunk” on Regretsy , and (of course) those peerless purveyors of Euterpean epopee, Professor Elemental and Mr B, the Gentleman Rhymer.” Heck, he got a fire burning under my butt. I mean, hot steam. I don’t think I’m doing this right.

    Steampunk has developed into its own subculture, literature, art, fashion, and all unified by the idea of a past-that-could-have-been. To answer your question, its an issue of misrepresentation, of people who distort its meaning and turn it into mass-produced garbage. 

    I know I am explaining this poorly, so the easiest way would be to compare it to those people who call themselves “geeks” by virtue of wearing glasses and a pop-culture t-shirt. You know, the people who have no inclination towards actual geeky pursuits and only call themselves so because it’s the “cool” thing to do, and will happily abandon it for the next shiny thing to come along. Same thing, and so the chap who made this is just calling out the people who do it to us.
