Kristen Wiig may have declined to make Bridesmaids 2 for very respectable artistic reasons, but that doesn’t mean she’s not making movies at all. In fact, it leaves the actress wide open for, you heard it, the director’s chair.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wiig and Bridesmaids collaborator Annie Mumolo are teaming up to write, direct, produce, and star in a project for TriStar. Says TriStar Productions chairman Thomas Rothman, “Kristen and Annie assured me that the film will be a searing and depressing drama, which is what the world needs right now. So we grabbed it.”
We’re pretty sure he’s joking about that, and that yes, the film will be a comedy. Said Wiig and Mumolo in an official statement:
We’re very excited to be writing. We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.
And that’s about all we know about it. Mumolo and Wiig will play best friends who’re “out of their depths,” a most venerable and worthy starting point for a feature comedy. With even less to go on for a release date or cast, what we have left to do is congratulate Wiig on her fancy new title, and wish her luck in that cave. Hopefully she can get Ikea to deliver.
