Trailer for Live-Action Kiki’s Delivery Service Has Actual Footage This Time

Unlike previous trailers for the not-affiliated-with-Studio-Ghibli live-action Kiki’s Delivery Service, this one is mostly comprised of actual footage instead of POV shots of Kiki zooming around on her broomstick.

It looks… cute. And kid-friendly. Ah, who’m I kidding? There are no English subtitles. I have no clue what’s going on here.

And now we wait for someone to give this the Mary Poppins treatment.

I believe, with my limited knowledge of Japanese, that it boils down to: she hates the world and is going to eat everyone’s soul. I may be mistaken.

Meh, the direction and cinematography (of this 1 minute clip, I know whatever) remind of something from the 90s. And now I want to see Wishbone tell the story of Kiki’s Delivery Service. And now I’m thinking I should’ve had something different for breakfast.

There’s almost zero dialogue, so there’s not much to go on. So far, the main actress seems to hail from the japanese popular school of acting of “I don’t know how to act, but I’m cute and spunky, so whatever” (and I haven’t seen Mai Kuraki in anything else so I can’t tell…). So… Dunno. But as noted earlier today, a trailer doesn’t mean much anyway. And most importantly, it’s best to not try to compare it to the Ghibli version.

Isn’t the actress playing Kiki a bit old?

  • kinoumenthe

Oops, Mai Kuraki is singing the theme song, not the young actress here, who’s Fuka Koshiba and is 17. So yes, she’s older than Kiki is supposed to be, but not that much, all things considered.

This feels so dated…. Must be something lost in translation or cultural. But artistic direction, cinematographic choices and general quality seams so… lazy?

Probably not going to bother with this. The anime is beautiful though.
