Karen Gillan Nabs Starring Sitcom Role About Social Media Woes

Karen Gillan won’t be flitting back over the pond once her time as Guardians of the Galaxy‘s blue-skinned, bald lady space pirate Nebula is done. She’s might have bagged the role of Eliza Dooley in a brand new sitcom from ABC.

The show goes by the name Selfie, and don’t just roll your eyes over to another post, as it’s apparently inspired by My Fair Lady, though maybe this time when she finds out about the bet, Eliza gives Henry Higgins a swift kick in the pants and then opens a finishing school for underserved girls.

Selfie tells the story of a self-obsessed twentysomething woman who is more concerned with “likes” than being liked. After suffering a very public and humiliating breakup, she becomes the subject of a viral video and suddenly has more social media “followers” than she ever imagined — but for all the wrong reasons. She enlists the help of a marketing expert at her company to help repair her tarnished image.

Another vote in Selfie‘s favor: it’s from Emily Kapnek, the creator of As Told By Ginger, Suburgatory, and a producer on Parks and Recreation. Julie Anne Robinson is slated to direct the pilot order, at which point ABC will have the option to pick it up or let it go. I’m sure Gillan has a lot of American fans who’d like to see more of her, and are hoping for just that.

The name is terrible, but everything else sounds wonderful.

didn’t “as told by ginger” have a weird subplot about two kids’ constant gambits to recover a severed hand from the other?

  • Joanna

An apt choice of film these days.

I’m still waiting for my announcement of Karen Gillan IS Jill Pantozzi in:
    Has Boobs, Reads Comics

    OMG don’t tease me!!

Just call it The Karen Gillan Show. That should do very good.

    Reserve me a seat.

I guess I always get a weeee bit nervous when stuff like “women” and “internet” and “things generally young people like that executives don’t get but want to make money off of” gets pulled into television plots together. Only because it’s really easy for it to become a cliche machine that also mocks women for various things including being “self-obsessed,” which could be anything from extreme vanity to choosing to dress how she wants. I don’t know, I’m a little uneasy with the premise.

  • Gerald Kirby

    I’ll sign that petition!

  • Heather Lynn

I’m a little worried this is going to turn into a slut shaming woman bashing show, no matter the credentials behind it.

  • Lucine

I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt because of ‘As told by Ginger.’

  • JustPlainSomething

Good point – I just get really defensive when it comes to women characters and stuff like this because we get crapped on SO much.

  • Lucine

Petrified eye, I think it was. It was awesome.
