Australian PM Does Joking Apocalypse Video; Proves Australia Significantly Cooler Than You

You might know Julia Gillard as the first female Prime Minister of Australia and leader of the Australian Labor Party. Or you might know her as one of the few world leaders out there who is openly atheist. You might also know her as somebody who can deliver a pretty awesome smackdown. But today, you know her as a lady with a sense of humor, after she recorded this clip for Triple J, a national Australian radio station dedicated those spry young folks.

If this were an American politician, it would somehow be spun to be insensitive, probably racist, and potentially panic-inducing should someone see it and not grasp she’s kidding.

I’m old enough to remember when politicians were witty, and did not get raked over the coals for it. I would have those days again.

Sadly, you may also know her as not being supportive of gay marriage despite being an atheist, living together with her partner (not husband), and having a kick ass gay minister for finance. She still has a little way to go.

As an Australian, I feel I should let you know that our election is next year. Trust me, I get the feeling this isn’t the last we’ll see of this video. *sigh*

That was my first thought as well. A lot of HKers also hold citizenship in the US or Australia, so we see a lot of coverage of both of their politics. Australia’s reminds me more of the US than any other country at times (an AU friend just returned from the US for study calls American politics a “bizarro version of Australia’s”). I’m sure that this and Gillard’s calling out Abbott’s misogyny will get a deal of play.
