Forget Secrecy: Joss Whedon Casually, 100% Confirms Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver for The Avengers 2

Unlike some filmmakers we could mention *cough*nolanandabrams*cough*, Joss Whedon is willing to just drop something pretty big and interesting about a project that isn’t due to hit theaters for two years yet. I’m not saying there isn’t room for more than one way to talk about your movie while it’s in production, I’m just saying…

I’m just saying it’s exciting to hear that we’re getting at least two female superheroes in The Avengers 2.

Whedon was asked whether some offhand statements made by him and Kevin Feige meant that the mutant twins and long standing members of The Avengers would be joining the team and instead of getting cagey like any other self-respecting Hollywood player usually does, he just started running his mouth about why he put them in:

You know, they had a rough beginning. They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.

Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver’s characters would eventually have been confirmed by casting (unless, you know, they were the villains in a J.J. Abrams movie), but it’s still nice to get the straight story in Whedon’s own words.

    Still hoping for She Hulk.

It’ll be interesting to see Scarlet Witch as someone who doesn’t go killing her team mates, including her husband, altering all of reality for the worse, depowering 98% of the mutant population, killing some of them, and coming back like it’s no big deal.

    “Superhero”.

YES! I only hope they will cast good actor and actress for the roles, and that their origin won’t be white-washed.

  • http://twitter.com/ladyoctarina Lady Octarina

There’s over forty years of published comics where she does none of those things, you know…

  • http://www.facebook.com/nuuni.nuunani Nuuni Nuunani

Hmm….Going by that statement, does that suggest that they will be a part of the Brotherhood when their introduced? Or working with an organization unaffiliated or opposed to Shield?

I know you’re right, but I still feel like saying this :P

And in the next Avengers, Wanda “No more mutants” Maximoff.

I like the idea of villains turned heroes (which was not explored with Hawkeye and very little with Black Widow) but those 2 characters leave me cold. Still, give me a good casting and I’ll be on board.

  • LizbethAnne

Yeah, that was my first thought too– at least there won’t be any mutants in these movies for her to depower and then later self-righteously say she did nothing wrong to!

The last ten years haven’t been Wanda’s best. But I’m sure if anyone can bring out the best in her, it’s Joss Whedon (the man who made me love Scott/Emma). As an added bonus, this indicates to me that she won’t be appearing in the X-Men movies, so we (hopefully) won’t be seeing House of M.

Wanda is my favorite female Avenger and I have the same concerns for her. While she passes for white, I’m concerned with blonde hair and blue eyes and British. Cause that isn’t Wanda

  • Katie

Cause it’s not like in the comics Iron Man started the Civil War or shot the Hulk into space or any of the other horrible things he, and other superheroes, have done. Besides before it being retconed as Doom’s fault I found it interesting to see a superhero with substantial powers suffer from a mental illness.

Is this a “yes, they’re definitely going to be in it” type of confirmed, or just a “yes, those are the two characters I was talking about” confirmed?

Joss Whedon apparently wanted Wasp in the first Avengers, but she sadly didn’t make it to the final version of the script because there was too much going on. Add in the complication of Magneto and mutants technically being out of bounds, I wouldn’t want to get my hopes up prematurely.

  • http://twitter.com/o6untouchable Jason Atkins

According to Feige, both studios are allowed to use Piotr and Wanda… they’re something of a special case because of how they’re strongly linked to both franchises. So, while to a sensibly-minded member of the general public it may not seem smart to have competing versions of Wanda in the X-Men and Avengers franchises, that sadly won’t stop a House of M movie from happening if someone wants it to. :(

  • http://twitter.com/o6untouchable Jason Atkins

The origin thing worries me too. Marvel Studios may be allowed to use the character, but the fact that they can’t use Magneto or any other mutants might make their backstory tricky to work around.

  • LizbethAnne

Good point….this is comics! There’s no place for sensible minds here!

  • http://twitter.com/o6untouchable Jason Atkins

Not just comics – comics combined with profit-orientated corporations!

I’m kinda hoping she shows up in MAoS as a dogged lawyer.

From what I understand it’s not as straight forward as not being able to use mutants, if that were the case they couldn’t use these two. They can’t use character who are more famous for being mutants or X-men than for other things, which is why these two pass muster as they are famously Avengers before they are mutants (obviously a lot of this is up to interpretation).

What they also can’t talk about is mutation as a mechanism, not directly. That is currently tied to the X-men IP. So they will just have to be general superheroes. How much referencing they can do their father, I’m not sure. I bet they will at least be able to talk about him as a morally ambigous figure, if not talk about any specifics of his past.

I’m more concerned about their Roma origins. They don’t have to explain their powers through the mutant thing; as Wanda’s powers are in great part magical, they could just go hat way to explain them both and later use it to establish a connection between the Avengers and the future Doctor Strange film. As to Magneto, while I love what his being their father adds to their story (oh, the angst! the feels!), for nearly 20 years of publishing time they didn’t know he was their father, so it isn’t really essential, though it would be nice to see on film.

I’m sure that Joss Whedon is excellently placed to take care of “technicalities”.

  • Miss Sadie

Oh I do love those two, but I have to wonder if they are going to take the Ultimate Universe take on them, since they took a lot of inspiration from the original Marvel movies from Ultimate universe. I doubt it since Disney is behind it, though it would be interesting but creepy.

Oh no, I still have tons of interest in seeing Cap and Iron Man get the shit kicked out of them because of what they did in AvX and afterward. Wanda’s just about as bad as them, since all three of them think they were the blameless good guys for decimating/oppressing minorities. So I’d still love to see material where all of them get their faces smashed in for what they’ve done. A movie of that isn’t going to happen, obviously, but one can dream…

I would like to see Wasp and Ant Man. You can’t have Wasp without Ant Man – and vice versa.

  • http://twitter.com/o6untouchable Jason Atkins

Unfortunately I think getting Ant-Man is unlikely: I’m not sure there’s enough time in the filming schedule to make Ant-Man before they need to start making Avengers 2.

Supposedly, Joss was planning to have Wasp in the first movie, but couldn’t find time in the script to introduce her. I actually think having Wasp without Ant-Man could still work quite well though: she’s served on the Avengers without him before, and it would be nice to see her being a strong female character in her own right, rather than just being Hank’s plus one.

Didn’t they get removed from the cartoon for being too campy?

  • Bunny Byul

I’m so excited! I love Scarlet Witch! Now if we could just get Ms. Marvel. And Spider-Woman. And *voice trails off*

  • http://www.facebook.com/eric.stark.9041 Eric Stark

How is that a new combination? If we look over at DC we see just how ugly a beast that is.

  • http://twitter.com/o6untouchable Jason Atkins

He was removed from the cartoon (assuming you mean Earth’s Mightiest Heroes) because that’s exactly what happened to him in the comics. The specific circumstances weren’t quite the same, but he left the Avengers, went off the rails, and came back as Yellowjacket, just like he did over the span of twenty years or so in the comics.

It is great to hear that Scarlet Witch will be turning up! Hopefully, like others have expressed, there won’t be a whitewashing going on in casting. That’d ruin a lot of it for me.

On a side note: I heard rumor of Joss including Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel, but maybe that was early draft rumors — or pure fantasy. I’m still holding out hope for the badass that is Carol Danvers, though.
