My Precious!

You Want to Watch Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lady Gaga Sing Baby It’s Cold Outside, Right?

Not gonna lie, I’m a bit disappointed that no Muppets put in an appearance during this Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lady Gaga duet. It was a part of Lady Gaga And The Muppets’ Holiday Spectacular, after all. But it’s a minor quibble. I want Muppets to be a part of everything, after all.

The special was disappointing. I was hoping Miss Piggy would duet with RuPaul, but no.

  • Rob Payne

The freezing cold Broadway stars did a better job of lip synching to their own pre-recorded vocals during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade than JoGo and Gaga here. Oof.

They switched the parts! That’s fantastic!

  • Joanna

Gaga has an uncharacteristic lack of stage presence in this. Gordon-Levitt is as dreamy as ever though ^_^

  • Christine Ferguson

I love that they switched the parts. I love her shoes. JGL is so dreamy. Otherwise I can’t help but feel it’s a little suggestive for the Muppets! Maybe that’s me projecting the meaning behind the song and not a reflection of the actual performance though.

So, not the best performance, but still made my day.

  • Anonymous

They have little chemistry. Gaga looks like she wants him for dinner.

A date rape song during a Muppet holiday special? I’m impressed.

  • Stephen Conway

I actually think that’s rather appropriate for the song.

  • Stephen Conway

He’s actually much better at holding the tune than Gaga.

  • J Ritchey

The Muppets are notorious for getting crap past the radar. I’m pretty sure this is actually tame compared to some of the things they’ve done over the years.

It’s a shame that, even considering the swap, this is a really bland rendition. It felt very by-the-numbers.

  • Ryan Colson

This special was a real horrorshow, what with the liberal term holiday, the general lack of holiday songs, the salting a lady gaga special with muppets to draw their fans in, the use of flipping out ass and suggesting people feel her parts up. Fucking classy show all things told.

  • Rogue428

So if traditional, it’s a “date rape” song. If the parts are swapped it’s okay. Gotta love it.

    I think you’re mistaking Gaga with Ke$ha :)

  • Camille Monae

i hate when they do that. it has almost become the norm. =(

Outside of the time when it was written, the original is downright creepy and stalker-ish. I enjoy the switch.

  • Anonymous

It’s still pretty creepy, but the switch does seem to level the field a little. Plus, I felt this version wasn’t as bad because of the acting of the two players: unlike other versions, both were “into” staying, despite what they said.

  • J Ritchey

I’m pretty sure that’s the way the song is supposed to play. Done well, it’s a flirty-teasey thing. Done not-so-well, it becomes incredibly unfortunate. It’s a very fine line to walk, and most performers don’t pull it off well.

  • Anonymous

It’s been done a few times before actually.

  • Anonymous

That’s what happens when she has to actually sing live I guess. A performer, she is, and a song writer. A singer though… debatable. Even for her apparently.

The Muppets have always been *really* suggestive. If you can, track down the ep of the original series where Raquel Welch was the guest star (season 3, which is out on DVD).

  • Octochan

The Kay and Peele version “Just Stay For the Night” will always be better than a swapped “Baby It’s Cold Outside”.

  • Rogue428

Exactly. But it does illustrate a sort of double standard. A girl kisses a guy spontaneously without the expecting it — it’s romantic. A guy does it — it’s sexual assault. (re: discussion on sailor kissing nurse in Times Square on VJ Day).

I’m not saying either is right. Just pointing out that not that long ago, I remember reading an article (might not have been on here) about this very song and how it was a “date rape” song). I’d heard that song my whole life and never thought of it that way. I always heard it as a flirty song with both parties looking for excuses to stay, the woman giving herself excuses to leave and the guy pointing out why the excuse wasn’t good enough and besides it was cold outside. Same thing here with the roles reversed.

I love Joe, but yeah, this was sort of flat for me. The whole special felt like one long infomercial for Gaga and the Muppets. I don’t know why I was expecting more than that.

I was introduced to Alice Cooper by the Muppets. They have hands up their asses, not sticks.
