British gymnast Jennifer Pinches was all smiles before her routine, and even found time to flash the Nerdfighter sign. Aw, it’s nice to know that when they’re not busy being the best athletes in the entire world, Olympians find time to watch the Vlogbrothers too. (via Nerdfighters.)

  • American Missy Franklin picked up her first gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke Monday, dedicating her win to Aurora, Colorado. Emily Seebohm of Australia picked up silver, and Japan’s Aya Terakawa won bronze. (via Chron.)

  • American Allison Schmitt won gold in the 200 freestyle  with a time of 1 minute 53.61 seconds. Camille Muffatt of France took silver, and Australia’s Bronte Barratt barely edged out Missy Franklin for the bronze. (via Yahoo.)
  • The U.S. women’s gymnastics team won their first gold medal since 1996, finishing first in all four events but the uneven bars and scoring a total of 183.596 points. Russia was a distant 5.066 points back, taking the silver medal. Romania won the bronze, 7.182 points back. (via The New York Times.)

  • Ukraine’s Yana Shemyakina won a gold medal in the women’s individual epee fencing category. Britta Heidemann of Germany took silver, and Yujie Sun of China took bronze. (via ESPN.)
  • Kazakhstan’s Maiya Maneza clinched gold in the women’s 63kg weightlifting category. Russia’s Svetlana Tsarukaeva took silver, while Canada’s Christine Girard picked up bronze. (via London Olympics.)

  • Divers Ruolin Chen and Hao Wang of China won the gold medal in the women’s synchronized 10m platform competition. Mexico’s divers Paola Espinosa Sanchez and Alejandra Loza Orozco won silver, and Roseline Filion and Meaghan Benfeito of Canada won bronze. (via The Sacramento Bee.)
  • China’s Ye Shiwen won another gold medal, completing the women’s 200-meter individual medley in 2:07.57, an Olympic record. Australia’s Alicia Coutts picked up the silver medal, and Caitlin Leverenz of the United States won bronze. (via Democrat and Chronicle.)

  • U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps has broken the all-time Olympics record for most medals ever, with 19, beating the record  of Russian gymnast Larisa Latynina, who won 18 medals between 1956 and 1964. She was in attendance during his record breaking performance Tuesday.”Latynina joked in recent weeks that it was time for a man to be able to do what a woman had done long ago,” wrote the New York Times.  ”And that it was too bad Phelps was not Russian.”
