it's time to play the music

We’ve been keeping a close eye on the upcoming fairy tale-themed movie musical Into the Woods ever since its first major casting announcement was that it would feature Meryl Streep as its witch. That’s the sort of thing that grabs your attention, y’know? And now we have another likely addition to the cast in Anna Kendrick.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Kendrick is in talks to play Cinderella, “a woman trying to find her place in the world” who’s married to a vain prince to be played by Chris Pine. As for the musical as a whole, it’s:

a darkly comic mashup of classic fairy tales that revolves around a childless baker ([James] Corden) and his wife ([Emily] Blunt), who attempt to lift a family curse by journeying into the woods to confront the witch that put the spell on them. Along the way, they encounter a group of characters including Rapunzel, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood.

Kendrick got to show off her pipes in last fall’s Pitch Perfect, plus she’s been doing Broadway from a young age. She also read for Cinderella in a table read set up by director Rob Marshall (Chicago) last year.

Deadline reports that alongside Kendrick, Pine, Streep, Corden, Blunt, Johnny Depp, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tracy Ullman, and Christine Baranski, there’s one more actor in talks to join the film: Daniel Huttlestone, who played the mini-revolutionary Gavroche in last year’s Les Misérables.
