This Was How Jim Henson Pitched The Muppet Show to CBS [Video]

Not a fresh and shiny and new video, but making the rounds today is what’s being called the original pitch to CBS for The Muppet Show. If anything, it’s a wonderful example of Muppet humor, not to mention a look into how Jim Henson wanted to sell his show. And wouldn’t you know it, just in time for the holidays, it get downright biblical!

I don’t describe things as epic very often, but it seems to fit for that video.

The sad thing is that the ending shot isn’t available. The video ended with Kermit walking out and saying “What the hell was that?” The reason this is unavailable on any current release is not the ‘hell’, but the fact that he was standing in front of a giant (and copyrighted) CBS logo.

Can we re-send this to CBS?  Get another one of these going?  I mean, seriously, how many cop shows does one network need?

The most surprising thing is (brilliant as this pitch is) it didn’t work.  All US network executives passed on this pitch.  It wasn’t until after the show was produced in the UK and became a hit, did US TV execs agree to put it on the air.
