Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham

Here’s your first look at the wonderfully crazypants Helena Bonham Carter in the role of the horribly crazypants Miss Havisham, with onemore below the cut.

A note for everybody who is a fan of cross universe pollination: Ralph Fiennes, a.k.a. Lord Voldemort himself, will also be appearing in Mike Newell‘s adaptation of Great Expectations, playing the role of Magwitch.

Villains: some people just do them better.

    She does crazy very well.

Yeah, but isn’t she a bit young/pretty to be playing Miss Havisham? I know Dickens said she was only in her mid-50s, but she’s supposed to have a wasted away in that house. Beside the hair, it doesn’t look like they’ve bothered to age Bonham Carter at all.

I like HBC, but this just one more of “those roles” you know she likes to play. Crazy, whimpering, possibly tragic, and baby-voiced with sprinkles of explosive shouting. Something where her first thought was crazy and goth lolita and she jumped aboard. I wish they had picked someone else. Havisham seems less of the crazy HBC likes to play and more of quiet dignity masquerading insanity type.

My first thought was: OH Burton is doing Great Expectations… oH.. Noooooo.

My thought as I now know she has been cast by someone else: OhhhhhhNo.

    Bonham-Carter is 45.

All I will say is “Yay!”, because Ralph Fiennes and HBC are two of my fave actors. Yay!

I just read Great Expectations last year (didn’t like it) but I’m excited for this movie, cause so far its sounding really good. That’s also exactly how I had pictured Miss Havisham’s dress. Although I do agree, if she’s going to play the role (especially with that crazy looking gray hair) she needs to be aged more.

That’s what I thought.  I always pictured Miss Havisham as much older, although if she was written as mid-50s maybe it’s not such a stretch.

Yes, but that’s still a solid decade younger than Havisham, who’s supposed to look even older than she actually is. Bonham Carter looks great for her 45 years, and they didn’t do much about it at all in the make-up here.
