Winter Is Coming

A New Excerpt From George R.R. Martin’s The Winds Of Winter Has Been Released

In the midst of HBO’s promotional whirlwind for Game of Thrones Season 4, Entertainment Weekly has revealed an exclusive excerpt from George R.R. Martin’s next novel in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter

While there’s still no release date for the sixth novel, we have seen sample chapters previously and even heard Martin read from it, so we know it’s close to finished. We hope. Anyway, the latest is from a Tyrion chapter:

Somewhere off in the far distance, a dying man was screaming for his mother. “To horse!” a man was yelling in Ghiscari, in the next camp to the north of the Second Sons. “To horse! To horse!” High and shrill, his voice carried a long way in the morning air, far beyond his own encampment. Tyrion knew just enough Ghiscari to understand the words, but the fear in his voice would have been plain in any tongue. I know how he feels.

Gah, just release it already! I want!

  • Prometheus

My brain decided to translate “Excerpt” to “Chapter” so I set myself up for serious disappointment. lol oh well…

Guys, I’m italian. What does “to horse” mean? To ride? Get me a horse? To the horse? Find the horse? Bring me a horse? I’m puzzled.

  • Anonymous

    “Get on your horses.”

And three years later the book gets released! ;-)

  • Caitlin

I’d rather them release the release date!

These things are usually chapter sized, so yeah.

It’s probably the pressure of HBO bearing down on him that’s made him produce what he has lately, because he certainly wasn’t making any progress before, despite fans best efforts.

I am seriously worried about his health, and actually managing to finish the series before something unfortunate happens.

  • Noj

Seriously. I completely understand the artist’s plight: having to produce a large volume with millions of readers breathing hot breaths behind his head.. but there’s 2 distinct reasons I’m not willing to cut GRRM any slack (with one possible exception).

Number ONE. STOP writing other books! Stop speaking at this place and that place. Stop attending all these conventions and co-authoring or guest-editing myriad volumes of literature.

I know, I know…I feel dirty after putting that all out there but there it is. I said it. Ice and Fire is your bread and butter. While I understand that your success has elevated you to a status “above” having to write things you might not “feel like” writing at the moment, **THIS** story and the people that have read (and RE-read) this great work GAVE you that elevated status. Don’t wave a hand at us and tell us to stop “bugging you.”

Number TWO: “Dance” came out in 2011. It is now 2014. We should at LEAST have a tentative but realistic release date. And that says nothing for the final book. I’m beginning to worry that you won’t live to finish it.. or that I won’t live to read it, should you be luckier and longer lived than I.

PLEASE understand, as a writer I completely understand the difficulty of meeting deadlines (which are no longer in your lexicon) or being pressured to write when the “juices aren’t flowing.” But you have created a brilliant work of fiction that rivals (and possibly TOPS Tolkien’s epic). In my eyes you have a RESPONSIBILITY to finish it, as foolish as that may sound. I believe that your contribution to literature is, in some ways, a sacred one.

In any case, and above all, I’m impatient and longing to read about my friends (and enemies) you introduced me to. You’ve been quoted as saying you had a thousand pages written many months ago. I know the edit is time consuming but you haven’t let us know when THAT might begin. Many of us would LOVE to enjoy the freedom we’ve afforded you by buying and falling in love with your books but we still need to meet deadlines and report to work on time. So…knowing full well my inappropriateness, ambiguity, and selfishness, I say quit fucking around with all your other projects and get WINDS into our laps. We’ll all love you more for it.

Yeah…. HBO are totally going to have to make the last 2 seasons up, aren’t they. I can see the byline now: “GOT Season 5. Based on cliff-notes and vague mumblings left on answerphones from the bestselling author of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire”

  • JustPlainSomething

Yeah, it’s an old-timey way to say “Get on your damn horse!”

  • JustPlainSomething

“We took some of the best fan fics, okay?” And then suddenly there was A LOT more gay sex in the show.

  • athenia45

GRRM literally sat down to write Winds of Winter in 2012, so hopefully we’ll be getting it relatively soon.

  • TheChief

I just skip trying to read these teaser section. Who knows how long it will take him to finish these books? I’d rather not get a taste (an excerpt) then have to wait a few more years for that book to come out. I really hope he finishes the series before he dies. Unlike Robert Jordan, he said he refused to have anyone else finish the series for him if he dies.

  • Aeryl

But he has told the showrunners how it ends, so they will finish it.

  • Charles M. Hagmaier

“While there’s still no release date for the sixth novel, we have seen sample chapters previously and even heard Martin read from it, so we know it’s close to finished.”

Oh, my sweet summer child. What do you know of Martin and his taunting excerpts? We went six years between A Feast of Crows and A Dance of Dragons.

Dance of Dragons was enough of a massive disappointment that I don’t know how much care I have left in me for further audience-abuse from the old torturer. Will he introduce another half-dozen viewpoint characters only to butcher, flay, or fry three-fourths of them inside of three hundred pages?

  • TheChief

The show can finish, yeah. But the books themselves are a different story.

Full chapter in March sayeth EW!
    Make it so!!!

  • myverysarcasm

Fuck any sample chapter! I want a Brienne sample champter in which we find out what happens with the Lady Stoneheart situation. That one’s been a cliff hanger for 10 years now!1

  • myverysarcasm

I kinda accepted now that ASOIAF will never actually be finished. But at least I discovered Kristen Britain’s Green Rider series that fills this hole in my heart. GR is like the high fantasy version of ASOIAF. And even though GR also has many POV characters, I find it more captivating because 60-70% of the story is from the POV of The Heroine: Karigan, the merchant’s daughter who was forced to join the king’s messengers and is now fighting to save her friends and loved ones from the oncoming civil war as well as the wild magic that’s threatening her country.

So I was skimming through the headlines, saw this, and my brain decided to delete some of the words while I was skimming and I saw “blah blah Winds of Winter blah blah released.”

I think my brain dead stopped for a second.
