Don’t Bother Trying to Get a Gold Mario Amiibo Unless You’ve Got at Least $100 to Spend

Nintendo's nefarious plan is working.

Just like every other Amiibo anyone has any interest in, the gold Mario Amiibo sold out within minutes.

The fancy figurine was exclusive to Walmart and was only up for preorder for a short time before the entire stock had been claimed. Now eBay has become a desolate wasteland of bleary-eyed, broken-spirited fans wandering in search of a fair deal that they’re never going to find—or just paying the extremely high asking prices on the originally $12.96 piece of plastic.

Polygon reports that some have sold for $100, and then there’s this:

No, that’s not a joke.

Walmart reportedly added more preorder stock later last night that also sold out, and it’s currently unknown whether they’ll add even more or let people fight it out when the Amiibo is due to hit stores on March 20 alongside Mario Party 10. What we can guarantee either way is that you’ll be battling hordes of ruthless fans and collectors, and you might be better off grabbing one of the standard-colored ones that comes bundled with the game and a little gold paint.
