Looks Like Pacific Rim Won’t Be As GLaDOS-y as We Thought

Generally speaking, I saw two types of reactions when the Pacific Rim trailer came out. The first was “Wow, this looks awesome/OK/kind of like Transformers.” The second was “… wait, is that GLaDOS?” And while Ellen McLain‘s GLaDOS voice did feature quite heavily in the trailer, that won’t be the case in the movie itself. Because, says Guillermo del Toro, they’re using a different vocal filter. Sigh. It was not to be.

In making the movie, del Toro “wanted very much to have [McLain],” he said to the Toronto Sun, “because I’m a big Portal fan,”

“…but just as a wink. She’s not cake-obsessed. She’s not out to destroy humanity.

I said, ‘Look, there’s no A.I. I’d rather have than GLaDOS… [but] the filter we’re using is slightly less GLaDOS. Slightly. The one in the trailer I wanted to be full-on GLaDOS.”

Show of hands: Does anyone feel lied to? Or would having 100% genuine GLaDOS in Pacific Rim just have been distracting?

    Oh man, I know absolutely nothing about Pacific Rim, but it still pisses me off that he would say he wanted the voice to sound exactly like it should in the trailer, but they aren’t doing it in the movie. WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU DO THAT ON PURPOSE?

    Simply having Ellen McClain on board for the voice would have been good enough to pay tribute to Portal. The voice in the trailer should have reflected her new voice, rather than her GLaDOS voice.

    Don’t worry. It shouldn’t be too hard to fix the voice up after the film comes out. I’m sure the internet will manage it somehow.

    Guys, this doesn’t mean McLain isn’t in the picture. It just means she’s not playing a character just like GLaDOS.

    I’m honestly very glad to hear its a different character, one of the worst things that can happen to an actor is to be typecast. Just enjoy McLain’s performance for what it is. Who knows? Maybe you’ll end up liking it even more than GLaDOS.

    I’m glad because now we can focus on the actual nerdy things about the movie. Giant robots and kaiju on the big screen and all anyone cares about is a voiceover meant to be a nod to a video game. It upset me that so many women said something along the lines of “I’m only seeing it for Glados.” I can’t be the only female into mechs and kaiju.

    I’m ambivalent, since I’m interested in seeing this either way. My brother, however, was really only interested in seeing it because of the GLaDOS voice.

    Um. Yeah. I think luring fans into wanting to watch your movie by having full-on GLaDOS voice in the trailer but not in the film itself is, well, fibbing a bit.

    And heck, after just being excited at the idea of Portal-references, I thought it was a brilliant move to make your audience just slightly on-edge, because whenever I heard GLaDOS’s voice, I become just a little more tense.

    Slightly with an emphasis on the word slightly less GlaDOS sounds like it means it’ll still sound a heck of a lot like her.

    I’m way more excited, to be honest, about hearing “Eva Launch!” in the trailer. That means this might be a runaround dodging all the problems we’ve been having in getting a live action Neon Genesis Evangelion movie made. Until I actually see the film, it’s slotted in my head as an Alternate Universe fanfic about Nerv-USA branch.

    I wonder if they WERE going to have the GLaDOS voice in the movie but then changed it because Valve objected to it or something? Either way, I’m kind of glad that they’re giving her a slightly different voice in the movie, so that it’ll be its own unique thing. I was already interested in this movie and I love Ellen McLain so I’m happy regardless.

    I was going to see the movie solely because I thought Ellen McLain (GlaDOS) would be in the movie. Knowing what I do now I’ve lost all interest in the movie and won’t be seeing it after-all.
