Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Girls Gone Wild, 1905 Style

Somewhere around 1905, a gaggle of girls from Miss Knapp’s Select School went on a lovely day trip to Coney Island for surf, sand, practical jokes, and some seriously rickety looking amusement park rides. The footage seems to like to dwell on the girls’ mischievous actions, so the comparison to today’s reality television is apt, though whether you find it endearing or depressing is a toss up.

One thing is for sure: this video could sure use some musical acommpaniment, so we’ve provided a couple of options below… pick your poison.

Heh…back then, they would have been amazed at the mechanical marvel I’m watching this film clip on.

Right now, I’m amazed at that machine they drove to Coney Island in. What IS that car?

I don’t know what the filmed car is, but somewhat related, my mother once dated a guy who liked antiques from the early part of the 20th century, had amazing stuff in his house, he also had an ENORMOUS car that I think was from the teens – 20′s at latest.  Its amazing how large they made the vehicles considering they often had very little horsepower.   Besides computuers, I think they’d be amazed and somewhat appalled at modern vehicles such as the new Shelby Mustang that has about 700 horsepower stock, but you can’t do much more with it than drive around.  You’d think for the amount of money it costs and that much power it’d be a locomotive that doesn’t require tracks that could tow your own food car, entertainment car, and sleeping car…

We’ve come so far….no more ladders to get into cars, pantyhose at the beach, and no more empty hot tubs turned on their side and called a “ride”.

Wow, that was an excellent video, thanks for that. The musical choices were also excellent, though I’m glad I clicked them in reverse order.

If I could time travel, the first place I would go would be turn of the century Coney Island, no contest.

Although I chose musical accompaniment by The Two Man Gentlemen Band :)

You only think that because you’ve never been to my uncle’s place.

How old do you think those “girls” are?  I love that they are so physical despite all that clothing – they just jump right in to everything.  None of them seem phased by the 4′ jump down from the car.  I love that horse race ride!

Worth noting that all those young women were wearing corsets.

    I love those bathing costumes!

1905 was the year my grandmother was born.  I gotta say, some of those rides looked like fun.
