This is from the anime UFO Robot Grendizer, which was extremely popular in France, where it aired under the name Goldorak. So Wikipedia tells me, anyway.

    And here's the chapel itself.

I hate to be a grammar nazi, but most of those aren’t gargoyles, they’re grotesques. They are only a gargoyle if they have a spout for water to flow through.

The story behind this is that this XVth century chapel needed a repair and all the gargoyles and grotesques had been destroyed in some way or another… And there is only one picture of the original ones. A large shot of the chapel itself. It then has been decided to use modern day iconography to replaces the sculptures.

And Wikipedia is perfectly right about the success of UFO Robot Grendizer in France. We still long for a sequel to Goldorak…
