Game Of Thrones Renewed After One Episode

Some good news for everyone who enjoyed Sunday night’s premiere of Game of Thrones. HBO has already optioned the series for another season.

Apparently a viewing audience of 4.2 million people over the three airings of the show’s first episode was enough for HBO to throw their weight behind another set of episodes.

Says HBO’s president Michael Lombardo:

We are delighted by the way [writers] David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought George R.R. Martin‘s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers. This is the continuation of an exciting creative partnership.

The current season is ten episodes long, and it can probably be assumed that a second would be of the same length. Having never read the books, we couldn’t tell you how far this means the show will get into the plots of George R. R. Martin. But now we’re really, really, going to have to figure out how to watch it.

How long until it’s on Netflix?

What? I don’t have TV in the traditional sense.

You can watch the first episode here. http://ch131.com/ I can’t wait to read your thoughts on the show!

HBO has a history of releasing DVD sets roughly a year after the show aired (just in time for the next season). They don’t have a contract with Netflix or Hulu, since exclusivity is part of their business model. If the problem is that you don’t have a TV, HBO appears to be releasing it’s own streaming site (free for all subscribers) for iOS and Android devices (here’s the article: http://mashable.com/2011/04/19/hbo-go-ios-android/). They say they’ll have every episode of every show they’ve ever aired, so it may be worth the $17/month price tag. Something worth looking into.

20 episodes, eh? That should get you about 1/8 of the way through the first book. This could potentially be the nerd version of Coronation Street here.

lol. I would agree. But, according to George R.R. Martin, the first season covers all of “A Game of Thrones.” Presumably the second season will be “A Clash of Kings.”

I saw the first episode and it moves at a pretty quick pace. So, I can see them fitting all of the first book in 10 episodes (leaviing minor stuff out, of course).

If you’ve watched any of The Tudors, you’ve seen a good example of HBO’s high production values for original programming, and their thought process behind developing a series.

They like to have shows that have a distinct beginning, middle, and an end. Personally, I love this. It’s much better than the “traditional” TV model of running a show forever, continuing to pump out material (if you’re renewed), and, more often than not, have the quality slowly degrade.

Same thing with comic books. Not new comic book needs to be a series. Same with novels.

I love the comic book mini-series (six-issue story or so) and maxi-series (12-24 issue story). Not every comic book needs to be published forever, and not every show needs to run forever (although syndication, [Re: M*A*S*H] will allow good content to flourish long after it’s gone off the air — well, good content, or, you know, something like Two and a Half Men).

I like the idea of TV shows that set out to tell a complete story. A beginning, a middle, and an end. What a novel concept! I’ll look forward to seeing how A Game of Thrones develops and grows.

    Huzzah.

Just wanted to point out that “The Tudors” was a Showtime production. But you could substitute “Rome” in your first sentence, and it would still be accurate!
