The Walking Director executive producer Gale Anne Hurd is moving from horror to sci-fi with the alien invasion drama Horizons, which was just picked up by USA. There’s an additional bit of info, though, that moves this show from “Huh, OK, this could be cool” to “When will this air? Give it to me now!” Namely: It’s set during World War II. USA has discovered the key to my heart, and it is the phrase “sci-fi period drama.”

Set during the height of World War II, Horizon centers on a secretary at the FBI who discovers that her husband might have been killed in a battle with a spaceship in the South Pacific. Obsessed with learning the truth, she becomes the only person standing between Earth and an alien invasion.
My headcanon is that the FBI secretary in question is Dana Scully’s grandmother. Or maybe Fox Mulder’s, depending on how skeptical she is. OK? OK.
The show’s writer is Burn Notice scribe Bridget Tyler, who submitted a script as a writing sample for a staffing job only to have USA’s senior vice president Alex Sepiol see it and decide it needs to be a show. I agree, Alex. I agree very much.
As excited as I am about the prospect of a WWII-set alien invasion show, the fact that it’s on USA brings me down to Earth (haha) a little bit. As a fan of Suits and Psych, I trust the network’s ability to attract creative talent and let them do their thing… but will they have the money and resources to put into a sci-fi period drama? Then again, sci-fi doesn’t have to be super-expensive, and the 1940s is a cheaper period to reproduce than, say, Victorian-era England. So my enthusiasm isn’t dampened all that much.
