ESPN Sportscasters Pack as Many The Princess Bride References Into Their Half-Hour Show as Possible. And it’s Glorious.

We don’t post all that much football-related stuff on The Mary Sue—that’s more sister site’s SportsGrid’s beat—but when a trio of sportscasters pack a good 18 The Princess Bride references into a half-hour show… well… how can we resist? Buzzfeed put together this compilation of all the references from Sunday’s NFL Kickoff on ESPN, and I’ve gotta say, it’s pretty impressive. They kept it to two “Inconceivable”s and even worked in the ROUSes. That’s dedication.

That almost made me not hate ESPN. Well done.

So I’m not familiar with the show. Do they set out to do a specific movie tribute each episode? Do they do it occasionally? Do they announce it ahead of time, or is more of an easter egg thing?

Usually it’s just an show that reports on news and analysis of the NFL and the games it has. Generally this isn’t something that show does… but ESPN is full of jokers and occasionally you’ll get something like this.

    Wha… the… I just… Huh!
My guess is a lot of it is scripted and the writer is a huge PB-fan.
Either that or sports commentators are way cooler than I thought.

All I missed was “Prepare to die”

Now, if this had been Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole from TSN’s SportsCentre, I wouldn’t have been surprised. But NFL Kickoff? Wow. Awesome!
