The Big Flash Twist and an Extended Look at the Rest of the Season Have Us Running Wild

Last night’s episode of The Flash was an excellent one but it ended with a extra long “this season on The Flash” promo which revealed some seriously cool things. Let’s discuss!

[Spoilers for all of The Flash through “Tricksters” plus some spoilery-ish discussion of the next episode.]

First, was anyone super confused when the promo said “this season on The Flash?” I suddenly feared they’d made “Tricksters” the finale or something. Anyway, let’s get to last night’s big reveal. Actor Matt Letscher (Boardwalk Empire, Castle) joined the cast as the real Eobard Thawne and spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the big twist:

My first reaction was, so what does that mean for Tom Cavanagh? They had an answer for that. I was shocked to understand that all the work that Tom has been doing over the course of the season was really, in a way, in service of another character. He’s been fantastic on the show. He’s just a wonderful actor and a great guy. What he’s done in developing Harrison Wells with this foreknowledge has been pretty masterful. To get the news that this was what was behind it was exciting. Yeah, I’m sure it’ll be a polarizing reaction, but for TV, that’s a good thing.

And on how this corresponds to the stories we’ve seen in DC Comics:

The Reverse Flash, or Professor Zoom, he took on so many different iterations throughout the history of The Flash, the comic book. I think Andrew [Kreisberg] and Greg [Berlanti] and everybody behind the show are trying to find the story they want to tell with the character and how it best forwards Barry’s story. In terms of what actually ends up happening from this point forward, I’m not sure, but I definitely have done some research now and know a lot more about the character. Motivations is an interesting question, because there’s not a lot revealed in this episode with regards to motivations, other than his most immediate need, which is to get back to the future where he’s from. But why he becomes the Reverse Flash, I’ve read several different stories of why this happens and how it happens, I’ll be honest, it’s still a little bit of a mystery to me. I think it’s something they’re building to in the show. It’s something we’re going to see more of later on.

He also talked about the secrecy of his casting. “Any time I was in the Reverse Flash outfit, they definitely would shoot me in an area where nobody could see me. They were very careful about doing that,” he told EW, ” It seems like that’s the norm on a lot of shows today because they want to be able to surprise people. They did everything they could to keep it a secret.”

And for that, I’m thankful. In this line of work it’s extra hard to avoid spoilers for the shows I love so I’m excited to have been surprised for a change.

And well, that brings us to that promo…

Never fear! The herBros are here!

Never fear! The herBros are here!

I replayed it about four times, once in slo-mo so I could see everything. And wow, was there a lot to see. Some I’d even say is especially spoilery but the most obvious were the team-ups.

Yes, we’re getting another Arrow crossover (which we won’t get until April 14/15th) but it also appears that more villains are teaming up. And damn if I didn’t get confused seeing Gotham’s Victor Zsasz in the mix there. I completely forgot he played The Mist on The Flash first. Perhaps all of this is indeed leading up to the Other CW Superhero Show.

And the blonde woman sitting in a very Felicity Smoak type chair? That’s The Walking Dead’s Emily Kinney, who we found out was going to have a villainous role a bit ago. What did you spot that got you excited?
