Shiny: Fox Teases a Firefly MMO at SDCC [VIDEO]

It’s not the new Firefly we might’ve hoped for, but Firefly Online, the game teased in the video above, is better than nothing, right? Starting next summer it’ll be made available on mobile devices, and according to our buds at Geekosystem (hi, buds at Geekosystem) if it’s popular enough developer Spark Plug Games might put out a PC version.

    1) Yet another thing to get hooked on till FOX decides it’s not revenue-generating enough to continue.
    2) YEEEEAGH! Papyrus font!

I think I passed out for a second.

I got excited… until I saw it was an iOS/Android-based game.

The trailer above tells us nothing. I remain highly skeptical given that it has FOX’s blessing.

I think the best chance for a game with the necessary scope, that won’t end up being just a relationship sim (i.e. “I wanna ride with the characters and insert myself into the drama!”), will be Star Citizen.

Hope and desperation are powerful things. I can’t help my heart soaring at the Big Damn Movie theme, or at the sight of the (presumably) in-game Serenity.

The timing is really weird though – usually a game like this is a tie-in for a series still on the air, or for a movie that’s about to be released. Is it just that they took the time to finish it, or is it being trotted out to die a simple death, or….?

I barely dare to think about that ellipse.

There’s a LOT of interest in sci-fi video games right now, and if they can bring in fans from other mediums all the better. See also: Defiance.

All I can think to say is: who cares!

It’s an Android or iOS mobile MMO. So probably not the kind of thing PC players will consider quality. Y’know, for our awesome PC’s.

The Firefly franchise as an MMO has had a REALLY weird history.

A company called DarkCryo started an online campaign several years ago for an MMO they were calling Firefly Universe Online. Progress on the game seemed to come in fits and starts, until Kotaku ran a story accusing the entire project of being a hoax (it wasn’t) and questions persisted about FOX giving them the right to create the game in the first.

Apparently FOX decided that there was still some cash left in the Firefly cow and decided to take advantage of it themselves, rather that granting the rights to DarkCryo.

But Firefly related stuff has always used Papyrus hasn’t it? I know it;s the new Comic Sans, and I never use it in design work because of that, but I personally don’t mind it.

This is relevant to my interests but sadly not my technological capabilities. I don’t think my 8-year-old Nokia would be able to do much with an app.

Really, if having something good and improbable dangled in front of you DOESN’T have you reaching for your sidearm and looking around for traps, you’ve learned nothing from hanging out with Mal’s crew.

This is how Reavers were made, you know. (Also, am I the only one who hopes that the app is really buggy and breaks all the time, but has a lot of heart and determination?)

Don’t care. If it’s Firefly and Joss supports it (and gets some revenue) then so will I…support it that is. I have an iPad. I will play. I am a Browncoat.

Who needs this when we have Wildstar releasing soon?

I don’t have a mobile device that does games, but if this goes to PC, Joss’s support will be the deciding factor for me. If he’s in, I’m in.

I once had a typography nerd (and browncoat) friend insist that the Firefly font is slightly different than Papyrus and therefore totally fine.
