Adventure Time‘s Genderswapped Universe Is Getting Its Own Comic Series by Natasha Allegri!

I don’t think there will be too many people who disagree with me when I say that Adventure Time is one of the best things Cartoon Network has going for it right now. The animated show focuses on the epic adventures of hero Finn and shapeshifting dog Jake, in a brightly colored world where there’s a princess for everything (Muscle, Hot Dog, Doctor, Warrior, Ghost, and Lumpy Space, to name a few notable ones) that… also might be the freakish result of the total nuclear apocalypse that ended our own civilization. Like, it’s there. If you read into things. While Finn and Jake are the main characters, the majority of the extended cast are hilarious or kickbutt or politically powerful ladies.

That ratio was reversed by Natasha Allegri, one of the artists, designers, and writers behind the show. And in another age, character designs for Fionna, Cake, Prince Gumball, Marshall Lee and the Ice Queen might have been kept in a sketchbook or portfiolo. But we live in the internet age. So instead this alternate version of an obscure cartoon has spawned fanart, cosplay, fan animations, and even an entire episode of the actual show featuring celebrity guest voice acting. And now, it’s own comic series.

After teasing the announcement by releasing this image on Monday, Boom! Studios, the company behind the other Adventure Time comics, including the Princess Bubblegum/Marceline the Vampire Queen starring Marceline and the Scream Queens, announced today that they will indeed be producing a Fionna and Cake comic. A six-issue miniseries starting in January, written and drawn by Natasha Allegri herself. Comics Alliance offers the official synopsis:

FAN-FAVORITE ADVENTURE TIME SENSATIONS FIONNA & CAKE ARRIVE TO THE HIT ADVENTURE TIME COMIC! Join Cake the Cat and Fionna the Human in this totally algebraic new adventure, written and drawn by Fionna & Cake creator and ADVENTURE TIME storyboard artist Natasha Allegri! When Fionna rescues a feral flame boy from a pack of wild fire lions, it starts her on a quest she’ll never forget… Don’t miss out on this sure-to-be INSANELY popular new ADVENTURE TIME mini-series!

Boom! Studios’ Adventure Time comics have always featured the cream of the crop of webcomics artists and illustrators with large internet fan followings, not to mention lots and lots of lady artists doing interiors and beautiful variant covers. I expect Fionna and Cake will be no different.

    I LOVE this. Prince Gumball is so charming. And yet, do I dare approach the smoldering danger of Marshall Lee’s chaotic neutrality?

    The only character I don’t think works in gender swap is LSP. She’s so much more interesting and likable being an obnoxious girl.

    This is really excited I’m huge fan of Genderswap!Adventure Time. I actually think it might be more popular at this point then the originals. There’s way more Fionna and Marshal Lee fanfics and art running about than Finn and Bubblegum. Which, I’m not surprised, because Marshall didn’t even speak but he still looked cooler than Gumball. :)
