That turned out unexpectedly well. 

We previously reported on the story of Florida high school student Kiera Wilmot. She was expelled from school and was meant to be brought up on criminal charges after producing a chemical reaction on school property. Wilmot was an exemplary student with no behavioral issues, and although no one was injured in the experiment, under the school’s code of conduct she was expelled and set to be charged with possession and discharge of a weapon and discharging a destructive device, a felony.

The event brought up serious issues of race as they pertain to the district and its police department and spurred a flurry of defense for 16-year-old Wilmot online, which included a petition to get the serious charges against her dropped. And we can now report they have been.

The State Attorney’s office issued a statement:

Based upon the facts and circumstances of the case, the lack of criminal history of the child involved, and the action taken by the Polk County School Board, the State Attorney’s Office extended an offer of diversion of prosecution to the child. The child and her guardian signed the agreement to successfully complete the Department of Juvenile Justice Diversion Program.

The pending case has been dismissed. No formal charges will be filed.

That means she might have to do some community service. While Wilmot’s fate at her school is still up in the air (she’s been attending an alternate one, separate from her twin sister Kayla), some more good news was to be had. According to BoingBoing:

Homer Hickam — the writer and former NASA engineer whose memoir is the basis of the movie October Sky — started a Crowdtilt campaign to send Wilmot and her twin sister Kayla to the Advanced Space Academy program at the U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala.. The cost of space camp can run upwards of $1200. Hickam paid for Kiera Wilmot to go and the Crowdtilt campaign raised the other $1200 for her sister, plus extra money for their travel expenses. The campaign hit its $2500 goal in just two days and is now up to $2920. Hickam says the extra money is going to the girls’ mother.

A second Crowdtilt campaign raised more than $8000 for a Kiera Wilmot Defense Fund. Now that the charges have been dropped, that money will go into a trust, to pay the few legal expenses the family does have and to cover costs associated with Wilmot’s education.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! 

Ok, fine. I know it has to end sometime but I don’t want to hear anything about the Game of Thrones series finale until like, 2025. What? I’m asking too much?

Producer Frank Doelger spoke to the Radio Times at the BAFTA awards the other day:

“[The number of series] is being discussed as we speak. The third season was the first half of book three, season four will be the second part of book three. George RR Martin has written books four and five; six and seven are pending.

“I would hope that, if we all survive, and if the audience stays with us we’ll probably get through to seven seasons.”

Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but that math doesn’t quite work, does it? They split book three into seasons three and four and even if the rest of the novels were brought back down to one season each, that would leave us with eight seasons. Uh oh, you know what this means? They’re going to have to cut a lot out of Martin’s books.

You may remember Executive Producer David Benioff speaking earlier this year about how long he thought the show should run.

“Ideally, the books come out first,” Benioff told Entertainment Weekly. “We don’t want to become a show that outstays its welcome and tries to turn each book into three seasons. Part of what we love about these books, and this show, is this sense of momentum and building toward something. If we tried to turn this into a 10-season show we’d strangle the golden goose. There is a ticking clock here.”

How long do you think the show should go on to wrap up the story? We also must remember Martin’s writing speed plays at least some role. He can tell the showrunners where his story is headed but would proceeding with it on screen earlier hurt his inevitable novel releases?

Unlike some filmmakers we could mention *cough*nolanandabrams*cough*, Joss Whedon is willing to just drop something pretty big and interesting about a project that isn’t due to hit theaters for two years yet. I’m not saying there isn’t room for more than one way to talk about your movie while it’s in production, I’m just saying…

I’m just saying it’s exciting to hear that we’re getting at least two female superheroes in The Avengers 2.

Whedon was asked whether some offhand statements made by him and Kevin Feige meant that the mutant twins and long standing members of The Avengers would be joining the team and instead of getting cagey like any other self-respecting Hollywood player usually does, he just started running his mouth about why he put them in:

You know, they had a rough beginning. They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.

Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver’s characters would eventually have been confirmed by casting (unless, you know, they were the villains in a J.J. Abrams movie), but it’s still nice to get the straight story in Whedon’s own words.

We’ve got a little bit of rumor, a little bit of fact today as it pertains to Matt Smith and Steven Moffat’s futures with Doctor Who. Dare you read on? 

Ok, let’s start with the rumor mill first since it may have no basis in reality whatsoever. Many fans have been disappointed with Moffat as a showrunner, specifically this season, and if the rumors are to be believed, so is the BBC.

The Daily Mail, here’s where your grain of salt should come in, reports on something a BBC “insider” said. “The 50th anniversary episode seems a good opportunity for him [Moffat] to bow out. Either way, something dramatic needs to take place to improve ratings.”

My personal thoughts are, yes, it would be a good time for him to bow out and let someone else take over the reins (Mark Gatiss?). Moffat has some great ideas and writes good episodes but I’m not sure showrunner is his forte.

Though according to Digital Spy, Moffat is already hard at work on Season 8. “It is real and it’s happening – it’s [taking up] most of my time at the moment,” he said.

But will Smith be along for the ride? We know he’s being courted heavily by Hollywood and is currently shooting a film with Ryan Gosling. Is his star shining too brightly to return to Who?

Nah, he’s just “on a break,” according to Digital Spy. Smith said, ”We come back and shoot the Christmas special over the summer, then we go on to the next series, which will either start filming at the end of this year or at the start of 2014.”

So there you have it. Meanwhile, you can catch the Season 7B finale, “The Name of the Doctor,” this weekend.

I can see it now. Before Moulin Rouge the only movie he’d directed was Strictly Ballroom, which isn’t quite so… er… Baz Luhrmann-y as his later efforts. So we’d get a few minutes into the movie, and then: BAM! Sparkles! Dance parties! A forbidden romance between McGonagall and Snape told through anachronistic musical numbers! Warner Bros. would never have seen it coming.

Earlier this week at a tech conference Yahoo CFO Ken Goldman noted that one of the challenges his aging company faces is making itself “cool again.”

And what site are all the cool kids on nowadays? (Besides this one, I mean.)

Yep. Yahoo! might buy Tumblr.

It’s not a sure thing—the story goes that Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has been “closely watching” Tumblr and discussing a possible acquisition with Tumblr execs, including founder and CEO David Karp. The dollar amount comes from Adweek, which notes that “the deal is not done, but could reach as high as $1 billion.”

With how big Tumblr’s gotten I’m frankly surprised it hasn’t gotten purchased already. It was always going to happen, if not with Yahoo!, than with someone else. Says Adweek:

…the company had been rumored to be struggling to raise more funding until recently. “They are looking for a liquidity event,” said one source. And Yahoo big ad sales force could help Tumblr ramp up its nascent revenue, while exposing the social networking/blogging behemoth to a wealth of new customers.

What might the purchase mean for Tumblr? Ads, for one: Everyone has bills to pay. Other than that I don’t know; we’ll just have to wait and see. Speaking as a Tumblr user, the people who run the site now do it weirdly: They add all these things that no one wants (changing icons, adding a button so you can e-mail posts, making it so you can’t include a link in a direct message to someone) and ignore the ones that people want to see, like a chat feature. A lot of the things people want are pretty  major and, I would imagine, heavily work-intensive, so an infusion of money courtesy of Yahoo! could in theory let Tumblr do some of them.

Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking. I really want a chat feature, guys.

Syfy has assured everyone that after wrapping up, Warehouse 13 will be turned over to “top men.” When questioned further, they replied:

“Top. Men.”

Deadline has revealed that Syfy’s four year old series Warehouse 13 is being cancelled. Fortunately, the show will get a fifth season to wrap itself up.

“Warehouse 13 has been an incredible signature series for us,” said Syfy President of Original Content Mark Stern. “We are grateful to the loyal and passionate fan base and know that Jack Kenny, his gifted creative team, and outstanding ensemble cast will give them an amazing finale season.”

Unfortunately, it’s going to be a half season of only six episodes, though I suppose this shows that Syfy has learned its lesson from the backlash to the cancellation of Eureka that left show runners scrambling to rewrite the ending of a season they were in the midst of filming. Eventually the network okayed an extra final episode in order to give time to tie up loose ends and say goodbye to characters. Warehouse 13‘s final season has not yet begun filming, which hopefully leaves enough time for showrunners to bring the series to a satisfying close.

Since we found out Luke Evans nabbed the lead role in The Crow reboot, it’s fair game for reporters to try and get him to talk about it. Thanks to press for Fast & Furious 6, someone got first crack and we found out the actor is no stranger to The Crow. 

Evans told Empire Magazine there’s lots of things he can’t tell us about The Crow reboot (boo!) but actually managed to say quite a bit. Sadly, he said he won’t start work on the F. Javier Gutierrez directed film for a while but he’s happy his busy schedule was able to fit it in.

“It’s a great script, really great script, a fantastic director - Javier Gutierrez, a Spanish director whose work is fantastic,” he told Empire. “We’ve been chatting about it for a while now, it’s been sort of simmering away and I have a lot of passion for that role. I remember it vividly from when I was a kid. It still resonates to this day.”

And in case you were wondering, Evans is already feeling the immense pressure of taking on such a beloved character.

“I hope people will be able to sort of enjoy a new version of the story and allow a fresh set of eyes on it and don’t worry too much about it being exactly like the last one. You know, because I think there is a bit of a cult following to this. People have a sort of ownership of the original,” he said. “But it’s been twenty years this year, it’s quite a long time since. I’m very happy about it.”

Still no word on what direction this reboot, based on the original comic by James O’Barr, will take.

So do we” to “Oberlin: Fearless.” If they’d done what the University of East Anglia (Matt Smith‘s alma mater) did, I can confidently say that a good chunk of the campus would have been overwhelmingly in favor of it. We might not have a Time Lord, but we do have Commander Sisko.

We heard a few months back that there might be a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in the works and that it might see Michelle Yeoh reprise her badass lady warrior role. And lo, it has come to pass.

The movie is called Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II – The Green Destiny, and it’s based on one of the other books in the series Crouching Tiger was based on. The director will be legendary fight choreographer Yuen Wo Ping, who worked on the first Crouching Tiger in addition to the Kill Bill movies and The Matrix. As for the writer, that’s John Fusco, who wrote martial arts flick The Forbidden Kingdom alongside Viggo Mortensen‘s Hidalgo and animated kid’s movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (that’s… varied).

And as for the most important bit, at least in my mind: Yeoh will reprise her role as Yu Shu Lien and will be joined by Donnie Yen, who’s done a bejeesuston of martial arts movies, among them the excellent Ip Man and Ip Man 2. If you have a martial arts-loving bone in your body you should watch the scene from Ip Man where he takes down ten dudes without breaking a sweat. It’s glorious.

Will The Green Destiny be as good as Crouching Tiger? Possibly not. OK, probably not. Yuen Wo Ping has directed a lot of movies before this one, but he’s no Ang Lee. I don’t even care, though. If there’s an historical martial arts movie wherein Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen kick some butt, I want to see it. It doesn’t have to win Oscars.

How well do you know that buddy/significant other/family member that you’re watching your Netflix show with? Maybe the question is… how well do you think you know them?

Because they could be cheating on you right now, by. Watching. Ahead.

Apparently, Netflix, ever looking for new ways to to understand the habits of its user base, has been studying the numbers on “Netflix adultery,” the phenomenon where one member of a show-watching partnership just can’t wait until the next Netflix night and watches ahead without their partner. Then they either fake their reactions to the plot twists they’ve already seen, or tearfully confess. From NY Mag:

Of those who cheated, 66 percent did so “at home by themselves on the main TV.” A shocking 21 percent confessed to watching in bed while their significant other slept… Forty-one percent of cheaters refrained from revealing spoilers; 12 percent would rewatch and “fake it” in their reactions; 14 percent felt so guilty they confessed to cheating.

Men ages 18-34 are more likely than women of the same to say that they’d totally cheat on their TV partner, by a margin of 20%, a fact that I assure you I take no pride in reporting, and a 51% majority of married folks said they would even commit Netflix adultery on their own spouses. Speaking as someone with a lot of close friendships spread over long distances, in a perfect world this sort of research would lead to a Netflix service that allowed you to sync your replaying with someone else’s Netflix account, remotely, so that you could both watch the same show without awkward countdowns and synced pauses, even if you can’t be in the same room that night.

The good news about all these numbers is that the actual percentage of Netflix cheaters is pretty low: 12%. However, only 10% of the folks Netflix polled said that they’d been the victims of Netflix adultery. I ask all our readers: what if that 2%… IS YOU.

The recently controversial redesign Disney’s done in order to induct Merida of Brave into the canon of their other princesses isn’t the first time Disney has done a sparklier, cleaner, trimmer version of their princesses. But it’s caused particular backlash in part because Merida represented a different kind of femininity than most of her other princess counterparts.

She’s the only member of the group, for example, who doesn’t have a love interest by the end of her movie. And unlike her action-girl counterpart Mulan, whose character development comes when she reconciles and embraces the dual presence of what her culture regards as “feminine” with what it regards as “masculine” in her identity, Merida’s identity reconciliation isn’t actually about gender. It’s about personal responsibility. While her betrothal is the catalyst of her rebellion, Merida is just as frustrated by her mother’s insistance that she learn history, politics, and how to inspire her people; subjects that while boring, are absolutely necessary for the responsibilities Merida will take as she grows older. It’s these skills that Merida uses to defuse her betrothal problems, and when she does create respect among her clansmen for her desire make her own choice, when she wants to make it, her relief is shared by her potential fiances as well. In Merida’s world, those responsibilities and her desire for freedom from them are not actually seen as masculine or feminine: she’s expected to rule with her husband, and before her brothers, despite the fact that one of them is actually the first born male in the family, and she’s being schooled in those skills by a female expert: her mother.

But I digress: it was inevitable that she’d get a 2D redesign to make her fit in stylistically with these lineups, criticized by many Disney fans for slimming and whitening characters, as well as smoothing the differences between their faces and replacing original hairstyles with more stylistically modern ones. I also understand why, after a movie that’s entirely about Merida accepting responsibility while using that responsibility to preserve her freedom from the traditional patterns of her society, and after all of the other traits that make Merida unusual (if not entirely unique, although that’s almost entirely because of the presence of only one other princess, Mulan) among the Disney Princesses, that folks would see this as a betrayal of her character. There’s a bit of a feeling like: if we have to homogenize and glitter up the Disney princesses (for the purposes of delighting little girls, not necessarily a bad thing), can we at least keep a few of the princesses who are less “classically feminine” (in our extremely limited cultural definition of the phrase) than their counterparts more in character, with more of the design cues that accompanied them for the majority of their films, where they spent the majority of their time not being “classically feminine?” It’s about options, and having a lineup of Disney Princesses that presents a diverse definition of “femininity.”

It doesn’t surprise me that Disney has said no, because they’re not likely to lose much by saying it. A Disney representative told the LA Times that despite a Change.org petition, “Disney has no intention of abandoning” its redesign.

The modified Merida was created specifically to welcome the character into the company’s princess collection. And according to a Disney representative on Wednesday, the image of Merida that sparked this maelstrom is part of a limited run of products including backpacks and pajamas. But images of the original Merida will also be available on consumer products, the Disney representative said.

Hope was sparked recently by reports that Merida’s image on Disney’s official princess website had been “restored” to that of her CGI version from the Pixar movie, but quashed by the reveal that her redesigned look had never actually appeared on Disney’s official site, but on Target’s website and on a site specific to the “coronation ceremony” played out by park staff at Disney World last weekend.

When we first heard there was going to be another attempt at a Wonder Woman television show after the failed attempt that was David E. Kelley’s pilot, we were shocked. We got as far as character descriptions and even a few actors’ names being thrown in the ring to play Princess Diana but then came a pause, one we hoped didn’t mean the end of the project. Thankfully, we can now report the series, titled Amazon, is still being worked on. 

All of the networks have been going through upfronts this week, presentations in which they showcase their returning and new series. While Amazon wasn’t on The CW’s slate for the fall, it was brought up as a topic for discussion.

CW president Mark Pedowitz:

“Oh God yes, it is being redeveloped, we’re waiting for the script to come in; we haven’t seen it yet,” he said. “We are preparing to pilot it off-cycle should the script be what we want it to be. We do not want to produce something that doesn’t work for that particular character — it is the trickiest of all the DC characters to get done.”

The Hollywood Reporter also mentioned a writer change-up. According to Pedowitz original writer Allan Heinberg (Grey’s Anatomy) is to be replaced by Aron Eli Coleite (Heroes and The River).

I think it can only be a good sign The CW are taking their time with this. They’ve got a hit on their hands with the DC Universe followup to Smallville, Arrow, and they wouldn’t want to ruin their momentum by putting out something sub-par.
