A Whole Ton of White Ladies Are up for Leading Roles in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Blinded by the light.

Eddie Redmayne has emerged as the favorite to play Newt Scamander in the Harry Potter prequel, Fantastic Beasts, and now a whole bunch of super-pale ladies have been named as frontrunners for his supporting cast.

According to The Wrap, Saoirse Ronan, Dakota Fanning, Lili Simmons (Banshee), and Alison Sudol (Transparent) are all being considered for “Tina,” while Katherine Waterston (Boardwalk Empire), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby), and Kate Upton (?????) are on the line for “Queenie,” Tina’s older sister.

Now, okay, I know this movie is set in 1920s New York, and white people, and “historical accuracy,” and all the same excuses they used for why the first season of Agent Carter was so damn white. But are you really telling me that we can believe in a world with magic and dragons but the idea of a lead of color is just going too far? I don’t know; maybe you’re just catching me on a bad day and I’m feeling particularly grumpy, but I’m sure as hell sick of seeing an endless sea of white faces staring back at me from my fantasy films.

Also, Kate Upton? Get it together, Yates.
