Okay, Darren Aronofsky. I was really disappointed when you left The Wolverine. You directing that flick seemed like a perfect storm of things that I like: artful directing, Wolverine, samurai, Hugh Jackman, period film, etc.
But if this is what you’re giving me instead? I actually cannot complain. It’s just a completely different set of things that I like.
According to Variety, Aronofsky has signed on to direct the pilot of HBO’s Hobgoblin, a series created by Michael Chabon and his wife.
So, those of you who’ve made your way through The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Klay (recommended reading for any comic book fan) will know that Chabon’s already got a deft ability to handle the tricks of stage magicians and the historical tensions of the World War II era, so with that in mind, here’s what Hobgoblin is about:
A group of 1940′s era stage magicians and con men trying to take down Hitler.
And somewhere at HBO there is a very happy costume designer dreaming of pinstripes and fedoras and pocket squares. The only way this could be more pleasing would be if Aronofsky was sticking around for the whole season, or more than just the pilot, but we understand he’s off to make a big budget Noah’s Ark film starring Christian Bale.
Soooo… we’ll see how that goes.
