The Hunger Games Holds On to the Top of the Box Office, Followed by the Stooges and Cabin in the Woods

Not a blockbuster weekend for the box office, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something newsworthy to report. The Hunger Games has held on to the number one spot for the fourth week in a row, making it the first movie since Avatar to accomplish such a feat. Let’s also not underscore the significance of this movie having a female lead and two “male-centric” competitors in The Three Stooges and The Cabin in the Woods. And while a male audience carried the latter to third place, I can tell you right now that Joss Whedon fans of either gender are flipping out about it. Including two thirds of this blog’s writing staff. Seriously, we might need a support group. Or a sit-down conversation. By the way, Battleship opened this weekend. Isn’t that crazy?

Donald Glover Has Made It Into The Amazing Spider-Man — Secretly, Like a Ninja

Some of you may recall that there was a half-serious internet campaign a while back supporting the casting of Donald Glover (Community) as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot The Amazing Spider-Man. That obviously didn’t come to pass, and Andrew Garfield got the role instead. (Though Glover and Garfield “talked it out” in the end.) But now, Glover has revealed that the spirit of that campaign lives on and will actually materialize in some shape or form in The Amazing Spider-Man. Yes, you heard that right — Donald Glover, or at least something related to him, will make it into Spidey.

Watch This 12-Second Video of a Guinea Pig Breaking a World Record

Get ready, we have some highly important world record news for you! Truffles the guinea pig, who belongs to 13-year-old Chloe Macari of Fife, Scotland, has officially broken the world record for a guinea pig jump by jumping a distance of 12 inches. The previous record was shattered — shattered, we tell you! — by a whopping four inches. Macari was prompted to train Truffles once she saw how relatively short that jump was. (Eight inches? Pssssht.) And Truffles seemed happy to take on the challenge, especially once his favorite food, cucumber, was involved as a prize. The jump, which took place on February 21, was accepted by Guinness World Records, which makes it officially official. Congratulations to Truffles and his human, Chloe!

Note: This record was only concerned with distance, not height. So let’s stay tuned to see if Truffles starts reaching for the skies!

The Avengers Beat Batman on iTunes, But What Will Happen At the Box Office?

As of right now, Marvel is beating DC in the movie trailer round, with The Avengers trailer surpassing The Dark Knight Rises in views on iTunes. Marvel also has The Amazing Spider-Man coming up, so their collective hits far outweigh Batman. But what will this mean for the movies when they come out this spring and summer? Are we turning this into an imaginary battle between rival publishing houses and the success of their spinoff films? Answer: Probably. It’s not a competition, you guys … just kidding. It probably is.

The First All-Female U.S. Navy Construction Team Breaks Building Records in Afghanistan

It was an ordinary task that was taken on by an extraordinary group — in Helmand province in Afghanistan, a project to build four 20-by-30-foot barracks in the mountains was handed over to the U.S. Navy’s construction forces, the Seabees. Not an unusual request. However, for the first time ever, the Seabees team tasked with building the barracks consisted of all women. Not only did they complete the project, but they completed it way ahead of scheduled, breaking Navy records. Not too shabby, ladies!

The Number of Physics Students Has Increased Since The Big Bang Theory — How Many Are Girls?

So, this is great news for science! Some experts think that a recent uptick in UK students signing up to study physics is due to a positive influence by geek-friendly sitcom, The Big Bang Theory. But while it’s great to see kids expressing an interest in studying physics in school, what is the percentage of girls signing up? And if there are less girls signing up than boys, is it because the show was so late in bringing good intellectual female characters into the geeky mix?

The Whedon Machine Rolls On: A Second Feature Is Announced For Bellwether Pictures

Doesn’t Joss Whedon look relaxed in that picture? George Clooney Discusses Batman and Robin in Public

No imperiled baby animals this week, but let’s talk about Batman. Not Christian Bale, not even Michael Keaton. And not even Val Kilmer. George Clooney. Many of us have chosen to have our minds wiped of Clooney’s turn as the Dark Knight in Joel Schumacher‘s second Batman movie, Batman and Robin. If you can remember any of it, it probably causes you a strange kind of pain or frustration. And I think it’s fair to say that fallen star George Clooney never saw his career recover … oh, wait, except for that amazing career he has led ever since donning the famous nipples — BATSUIT. Batsuit. And now, he’s admitting a few things about Batman and Robin, and it includes some swear words.
