Tomorrowland is a movie shrouded in secrecy, being put together by Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof, two names that many folks would follow to any movie theater even if they weren’t working together. We’re interested in it not the least because if rumors are to be believed, while George Clooney and Hugh Laurie are playing major characters, neither are playing the lead. In fact, the lead, and both of the two remaining main characters will be played by young women. Those rumors stand supported with the announcement of Raffey Cassidy in the role of a butt kicking robot girl.

I’ve been waiting patiently for the first trailer for Elysium, director Neill Blomkamp‘s follow-up to District 9. Now it’s here, and it does not disappoint. Jodie Foster looks quite villainous as the director of Elysium, a paradisal space station where the privileged live, leaving the rest of humanity to the squalor and chaos of Earth. Matt Damon, meanwhile, is the hero who has to break into Elysium. And District 9‘s Sharlto Copley pops up, too!
It comes out August 9th. Can’t wait.

Looks like J.J. Abrams loves Karl Urban as much as the rest of us. Not hard to believe. The dude’s Bones and Eomer. If there’s someone out there who doesn’t like him then I don’t want to know about it.

It doesn’t take much to make our ears perk up and pay attention to a movie, and the possibility of some cool ladies in a movie is definitely one of those things. Cool being an, admittedly, simultaneously very broad and very specific definition.
Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof have been teasing their upcoming Disney project for months now, first under the working title 1952, before the film’s actual title was revealed to be Tomorrowland, after the themed attraction at many Disney parks. They even went so far as to reveal a mysterious image of a suitcase full of random stuff, so that the internet could go crazy identifying it all and wondering what it might mean. Clearly somebody out there knew what the movie was about, since Hugh Laurie and George Clooney are both attached to the movie. And now, thanks to casting info, we might have a clue to what it’s all about.

I’ll say up front that I have no particular knowledge of the safety of robot assisted surgery, the long-term health effects, or its impact on the medical and patient community, other than the fact that the Wikipedia article on it has no less than four “issues” listed at the top of it and they’ve all been there since 2010.
What I do know, is that this actual commercial is one step away from an actual Saturday Night Live Sketch, and also that they really, really could have come up with a more serious url than one that implies swatting a roomba with a rolled up newspaper. (Also, I just checked, and badrobotsurgery.tumblr.com is totally available, people.)

Cryogenics is something we’ve seen often in our favorite sci-fi products but more people are opting to preserve themselves this way. If they can afford it, of course. So when a 23-year-old neuroscience student was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, she asked the internet for help raising the money to freeze herself until a cure is found. The effort was successful and Kim Suozzi is now cryogenically preserved.

Not quite sure e-readers are for you? They are a significant expense after all, and not everyone is ready to leave those delicious smelling pages behind. But you’re in luck if you live near Bexar County in Texas. They’re about to open the nation’s first bookless public library system.

More and more these days we’re witnesses the technologies from our favorite sci-fi films and television shows get closer to reality. The latest is a new kind of software meant to predict the actions of criminals. Baltimore, Maryland and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania are already using it to prevent murders and Washington D.C. is next on the list. Don’t worry, no one is keeping psychics in a pool. Well, not that we’re aware…
