Community Gets a Season Five! Here Are Other Geeky Shows That Made the Cut And Got the Axe

Over the last few days lists of TV shows renewed, cancelled, greenlit, and not picked up have been rolling in. We’ve already told you about a few: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been picked up, because of course it has, as has Alfonso Cuarón‘s Believe, about a ten-year-old girl with superpowers.

How have other shows of geeky interest fared?

New Superheroes, One Not-So-New Superhero, Might Pop Up on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Followers of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will know that Agent Coulson will be popping up in the show—in fact, he’s one of the leads—and that Agent Maria Hill might put in an appearance as well. But what about other characters from the Marvelverse? People who’ve been in the comics but not the movies, say? Like new superheroes?

Entertainment Weekly asked Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige just that, and his answer was pretty intriguing.

The BBC Recognizes Their Gender Imbalance, Takes Steps to Get More Female Experts on TV and Radio

We wrote yesterday about Doctor Who‘s issue with female writers (they don’t have any), but today our attention turns to another aspect of the BBC: Their TV and radio news programs, which have been criticized in the past for their whacked-out ratio of male to female guests. Specifically, male experts are four times more likely to get airtime than female experts. This is in part because journalists’ metaphorical Rolodexes tend to be dude-heavy, but also because, as stated by The New York TimesGail Collins, “women don’t put their hands up as often as men” when it comes to op-ed journalism.

And, wouldn’t you know it, the BBC has acknowledged that this is a problem and decided to do something about it.

Animaniacs Supercut is Zany to the Max, Includes (Most Of) the Theme Song’s Alterate Endings

You remember Animaniacs? How it was awesome? And kind of twisted? And had Slappy the Squirrel, who was the best ever? And how the Warner Bros. (and the Warner sister, Dot) would change the ending to their theme song every episode? YouTuber TammieRD has assembled a supercut of all the alternate endings, at least the ones available on DVD. The video’s a few years old, but I just saw it, and there’s never a bad time for Animaniacs. Click play and revisit your childhood.

Nielsen Changes Its Definition of “TV Watching” to Reflect How People Actually Watch TV

I’m about to say something that will blow your mind. You ready? A lot of people nowadays don’t have cable. And yet they still watch TV shows! I know, I know. I’ll give you a second to recover from the shock. Remember to breathe.

OK, so the fact that a large number of people watch some, if not all, of their TV shows through an Internet-connected TV instead of stumping for an often outrageously priced cable package isn’t exactly new. But apparently it’s quite the discovery for the Nielsen Company, which is just now getting around to changing its definition of “TV viewing” to include this newfangled thing called “The Internet.”

Happy Halloween! Community Got the Lowest Ratings in Its Demographic Ever Last Night

Even die-hard Community fans weren’t feeling optimistic about this spring’s season of Community, which lacks the guiding hand of Dan Harmon after his firing and was pushed back from an October premiere date at the last minute. Which is precisely why the show’s Halloween episode “Paranormal Parentage” aired last night, on Valentine’s Day.
