Happy International Tabletop Day! And Happy First Contact Day, Too!

Today, tabletop gamers around the world are celebrating the sublime pleasure of chucking dice and flipping cards (you are going to send us pictures of your game day, right?). And on this day forty-nine years from now, Zefram Cochrane will become the first human to travel in a faster-than-light vessel, thus initiating first contact with the Vulcans. Whether you spend today destroying your friends’ defenses or decorating cupcakes with delta shields — or both — it is a good day to be a geek.

You’ll be comforted to know that even in the age of holodecks, friends will still make time to sit around tables and game together. Though this clip focuses on three-dimensional chess, I believe the lesson learned here can be applied to any game of strategy. Kotra, for example. Or kadis-kot.

Samuel L. Jackson Talks the Return of Frozone, The Greatest Good The Incredibles 2 Is Ever Gonna Get

“Every time I run into Brad [Bird] he always tells me Frozone is going to be part of whatever’s going on, so I have to believe that. I guess they would be the Incredibles without Frozone, but I think Frozone would be a wonderful addition to what’s already there. I’m just looking forward to seeing what Jack-Jack turned into.”Samuel L. Jackson talking to Digital Spy about his (potential) role in the recently announced The Incredibles sequel. If Frozone’s not in it, I boycott. It wouldn’t be very chill of Pixar to freeze him out. Not ice at all.

As for the image… oh, the wonders of Google Image Search.

Someone Give Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart a Late Night Talk Show

Last week Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart appeared together not merely in a number of adorable photographs, but in actual moving recorded film on Late Night with Seth Meyers. McKellen and Stewart confided that they’d always wanted to be a talk show host and band leader, and, well, watch the video.

Where’s their show, television? And where’s my fan art of the two doing Aang and Zukko’s dragon dance, internet?

Watch The Trailer For Star Trek: Renegades Starring Chekov & Rachael From Blade Runner

Last year, a Kickstarter campaign was launched to fund a special film/pilot based in the Star Trek universe. But this wasn’t any old fan film. Walter Koenig, aka Chekov from the original series, and a few other familiar faces from Star Trek and sci-fi history had joined to create something unique – Star Trek: Renegades. According to the official website, “It is ten years after Voyager’s return from the Delta Quadrant, and the Federation is in a crisis. The Federation’s main suppliers of dilithium crystals are disappearing. Space and time have folded around several planets, effectively isolating them from any contact with outside worlds. And this phenomenon is not natural – someone or something is causing this to happen. This necessitates drastic measures; some of which are outside the Federation’s normal jurisdiction.” And now we’ve got our first official trailer. What do you think?

HerUniverse Boldly Goes Where No T-Shirt Has Gone Before

HerUniverse recently held a design contest in conjunction with ThinkGeek for an exclusive Star Trek t-shirt. The winner? This “EntHERprise design. “I almost didn’t enter this one, assuming everyone else in the competition would also instantly notice that the classic female symbol sure looks like the top view of the original Enterprise, with nacelles added on, of course,” said winner Jeremy Sniatecki. “I ran the concept by my wife, who is a major sci-fi fan and a trusted sounding board for all things creative, and she LOVED the simplicity of it! ‘I would TOTALLY buy and wear that!’ she said, and so I entered it! She’s very choosy about her own nerdy t-shirt purchases, so that was high praise indeed.” The fact that no one has done this before blows my mind. I will be needing one immediately. Get yours at ThinkGeek.
