The CW’s Mary Queen of Scots Show Looks Like Gossip Girl In 16th Century France, But Worse [VIDEO]

I expected it to be ridiculous (because CW), but, well, take a look at this first clip from Reign for yourself and tell me if your reaction is anything other than staring at your screen in abject horror.

Or, heck, maybe you’re staring at your screen in delight. This looks like it might be one of those so bad it’s good, buy some wine and give it the MST3K treatment sort of things.

Either way, it is impossible to prepare yourself for the awfulness of this clip. Mary, I am so, so sorry. You deserved better.

Funko Pop! Feeds Your 80s Nostalgia With She-Ra, TMNT, Robocop, & More!

Available in the next few months from Funko are a slew of 80s-themed vinyl Pop! figures. Translated to Jill speak that means, I’m gonna go broke. Check out the designs they’ve come up with for the Masters of the Universe crew, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and more. If I have one qualm with the new figures it’s that poor She-Ra was given tiny feel like Daenerys from Game of Thrones who, I can tell you from experience, leans heavily upon my Drogo Pop! because she’s top heavy.

Time Travel Trip of the Day: The Muppet Show References Doctor Who

One of the things about The Muppet Show that isn’t obvious to the casual observer is that it was filmed in England because even with the success of Sesame Street (or perhaps because of it), the only production company interested in trying to produce a Muppet series for adults was Associated Television in Elstree, England. While this was great for the Star Wars episode, because props and costumes could literally be wheeled down the street from the sets of The Empire Strikes Back, it was a bit of an annoying hurdle for all of the American celebrities the show was trying to attract as guest stars. But despite its technical nation of origin, according to Anthony Strand, this is the only mention of Doctor Who that ever made it on the show.

Get Your 90s Nostalgia on With It’s the shizNICK; an Exhibition of Classic Nickelodeon-Inspired Art

I didn’t immediately recognize which Nickelodeon show Nicole Gustafsson intended to show here… until I read the title of the piece, “Seeking the Neematoad” and noticed that one of those tiny figures is wearing a green sweater vest. It’s Doug! It’s the shizNICK opens this Friday in Los Angeles, but if you, like most people, aren’t going to be around (you know, you’re a busy person) you can see a bit of the art from it right here.

HBO’s Doing an Historical Comedy About Paleontologists. Called Bone Wars. This Is a Good Day.

A Steve Carell- and James Gandolfini-starring made-for-TV comedy isn’t our normal sort of thing at The Mary Sue. But if it’s about “feuding paleontologists”? Based on a real-life event called the “Great Dinosaur Rush”? And called Bone Wars? You bet your sweet bippy we’re covering it.

Have Some Greek Mythology with Your Superheroes

As a nerd whose very first foray into nerdery was an elementary school obsession with Greek mythology, Nicholas Hyde‘s Greek-inspired superhero art is like ambrosia for my eyes.

(Yes, it makes them immortal. Clearly that’s what I meant.)

Hit the jump for Greek-style Spider-Man and Thor.

What A Reboot Of The Gargoyles Animated Series Might Look Like

Last week we were thrilled beyond belief to learn Capcom has created DuckTales: Remastered, a video game that harkens back to the classic Nintendo game based on the animated series. Here now with some 90s nostalgia is an updated look at Greg Weisman’s Gargoyles. This series holds a special place in my heart, not just for the characters and storylines, but voice actors as well. DeviantArtist Digital Tofu illustrated much what I’d expect from a CGI reboot of the series. Take a look for yourself.

Lady-Made Embroidery of the Solar System… From 1811

The Museum of Childhood recently published a picture of this hundreds of year old unfinished embroidery sampler that’s very unusual. Embroidery at the time was seen as a good pastime for a young lady, not just because it taught skills like sewing and mending but because it required “patience and concentration, and it kept women at home, focussed on a virtuous domesticity.” Samplers usually depicted domestic, lady-appropriate scenes, so not as to upset the delicate sensibilities of any passersby. This sampler, as you might have noticed, is instead a very scientifically minded model of the Solar System, roughly as it was known at the time, and thinks that this may have been the work of a science minded young woman itching for a way to interact with a field denied to her. For example, they note that the sampler is decades out of date with the planets as they were known in 1811. “That might explain why the sampler wasn’t finished. Who, in 1811, would want to spend weeks or months working on a picture of the Solar System that didn’t include the newest, most exciting planets?”

Certainly not a nerd. We’re kind of sticklers for accuracy, you know. You can read the whole post, which goes on to talk about the science of the time, women of the time, and women in science of the time.

This Is What Game of Thrones Would Look Like If It Were Made in 1995 [VIDEO]

Ever wonder what Game of Thrones would look like if it were a ’90s show only watchable on scratchy VHS? If so, it’s your lucky day. If not… no, who am I kidding? Everyone’s wondered that.
