BBC Writer Explains How Torchwood Lost It With Miracle Day

Your mileage may vary but I really hated Torchwood: Miracle Day. It took what was once a really unique sci-fi show with interesting characters and turned it into a bland U.S. extension with awful character development. If you found yourself thinking the same, you’re not alone. Doctor Who and Torchwood writer Chris Chibnall thinks he knows why it didn’t work.

O, Hear the Musings of Henri the Ennui Cat, and Then a Response From a Dog [Videos]

Update: There Is [Not] Going to Be A Firefly Spin-Off Movie in 2012, But No One From Firefly is Involved

Update: Turns out there’s simply going to be a movie with no one from Firefly involved. The Firefly connection came out of a comparison (the film is just meant to be Firefly-esque) and then a bit of blogger telephone. Happens to the best of us, but we do apologize. You may return to your bunks.

We would never, ever want to toy with your emotions with a headline like that because it is accurate. However, that’s the good news. And when there’s good news, there is often bad news. It’s not terrible, but it does involve the cast of Firefly and their lack of involvement in this movie. That is, none of the original cast are involved in this movie. But Firefly‘s universe did not end with the show, and a low-budget movie is set to continue the story some time next year. Thank you? All aboard, Browncoats (if you’re still interested)!

Final Performances of Julie Taymor’s Spider-Man Musical Take Place This Weekend

This weekend will mark the end of Julie Taymor‘s production of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Not the whole show, just her version of the show which is now being reworked since her firing last month. Much like the plague survivor in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, this show is not dead yet. It will return May 12 after a complete creative overhaul with a new production team. But I’ll bet you were wondering what kind of hot mess you’ve been missing!

The 83rd Academy Awards: Kinda Meh

The challenge for every blogger covering the Academy Awards this year seems to be to make a reasonably interesting-sized molehill out of a regular molehill. No one movie won more than four awards, there weren’t any breakout surprises, and the most shocking thing about the broadcast seems to be that Melissa Leo used the f-word. Come on.  Last year Ben Stiller showed up in a Na’vi costume.

And unlike last year, the number of really beloved genre films treated to nominations was slim. Inception, the tent pole movie of many a geek’s 2010 summer managed to pull only half of the awards it was nominated for, and half of those wins were Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, the two Oscar categories that no one can ever remember the difference between.

Yes, yes, unless you’re in film school.
