Two New Studio Ghibli Films Are Incoming for 2013

Anime fans rejoice: Studio Ghibli has announced that directors (and Ghibli co-founders) Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata will each come out with a new film in 2013. More than that, the two films—The Wind is Rising and The Tale of Princess Kaguya—will be coming out on the same day.

The Avengers, Redesigned as a Part of Japanese Folklore

We here at The Mary Sue are all in favor of great tastes that taste great together. Who doesn’t like a crossover you can really sink your teeth into, especially when it comes to the well-worn territory of The Avengers? Fear not, comrades at arms. For those wishing this summer’s box-office bunker-buster had a little more samurai spirit amidst its sound and noise, the Internet has got you covered!

Artist Alex Mitchell, who has previously applied his knowledge of traditional Japanese yōkai, oni, arms, and armor to DC’s Justice League, here takes a more historical, but no less fantastical, approach to the current Avengers ensemble. Beyond the obvious appeal, there’s a carefully considered wealth of detail in these re-imaginings that compliments each character, allying them dutifully with Japanese cultural archetypes and real historical figures. Mitchell has even put thought into name translation, and a bit of alternative backstory for each. Now tell us this isn’t one anime-ification you would be thrilled to see.

Japanese Trailer for Brave Shows a Ton of New Footage

A lavishly designed and animated fantasy-action family film featuring a combat-ready female protagonist is something of a rarity in American animation, but decidedly not in anime. After all, Hayao Miyazaki‘s Studio Ghibli has been producing fantasy heroines for years, from Nausicaä to Kiki, Princess Mononoke to Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle to The Secret World of Arrietty. So it should come as no surprise that the Japanese trailer for Brave is pretty much like somebody went into the future and the only thing they could bring back was a fanmade trailer for Brave that recut the movie as if Miyazaki himself was in charge.

Also the movie is called Merida and the Frightening Forest.
