Baz Luhrmann On That Time He Turned Down Directing a Harry Potter Movie

“The first one came along and they rang me, and while I love the pictures and the books now, then I thought, ‘What’s that?’ And said, ‘Well that sounds interesting, but I’m thinking of doing a reinvention of the modern musical’, and that was Moulin Rouge. So I’m an obvious idiot, because I should have taken Harry Potter.” — Director Baz Luhrmann on how, in another life, he might have directed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

I can see it now. Before Moulin Rouge the only movie he’d directed was Strictly Ballroom, which isn’t quite so… er… Baz Luhrmann-y as his later efforts. So we’d get a few minutes into the movie, and then: BAM! Sparkles! Dance parties! A forbidden romance between McGonagall and Snape told through anachronistic musical numbers! Warner Bros. would never have seen it coming.

Hermione Granger Parties, Steals Shoes in the Trailer for The Bling Ring [VIDEO]

OK, OK, so it’s Emma Watson, not Hermioine Granger. But thievery does abound in the trailer for director Sofia Coppola‘s The Bling Ring, which is based on the true story of a group of California teens who stole over $3 million worth of goods from rich Hollywood folk in 2008-2009.

Man, this trailer is just chock-a-block full of attractive white people, isn’t it? For the record, this is what the actual Bling Ring looks like.

Harry Potter’s Emma Watson & Daniel Radcliffe Looking To Take On Two Classic Characters

Alice Finch’s Lego Model of Hogwarts Has to be Seen to be Believed

What’s most remarkable about the model is not even that it’s so large (13 feet on a side and involving around 400,00 bricks) but the loving attention to detail that’s been lavished on it, from the pile of pink cups in the Astronomy classroom, to the floating candles in the Great Hall, and the Grey Lady somberly standing alone on a balcony.

It all started with Alice Finch, mom of two, realized that she still loved building with Legos, and not just because it meant spending quality, creative time with her kids. Or maybe it started when she became frustrated with one-sided official Harry Potter Lego sets that were less than accurate. Or maybe it was when she completed her minifig-scale model of the Great Hall, and decided that she just had to do more. In any case, it has ended with her model winning the rare combination of both the People’s Choice and Best in Show awards at BrickCon 2012 this year. BrickCon was in October of last year, and it’s taken this long to reassemble it in a proper space for photography (thanks in part to another master builder) and get the pictures online.

This Loom Made Out of LEGOs is More Entrancing Than It Probably Should Be [VIDEO]

You only need to watch the first 20 seconds or so of this LEGO loom in action to get the gist of how it works, but I ended up watching the whole thing with a glazed expression on my face. It’s mesmerizing. And the scarf it creates is pretty awesome, too.
