The Doctor Who Theme Song, As Played by Eight Floppy Disk Drives [Video]

Who doesn’t love old school floppy disk drives as musical instruments? Ears. Probably ears. I mean, it’s a groovy, retro concept, since they make all that rickety noise. But let’s be honest: it sounds like they have a dalek in their throats. Someone get them a Ricola. Or WD-40. Or tea with honey and a day at the beach. But yes, this is cool for just under a minute, which is exactly how long this video lasts.

Interview: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Robotic Edition

Mark Twain’s novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is what most would call a “classic.”  Published in 1884 with illustrations from E.W. Kemble, Huckleberry Finn was not widely praised but rather criticized for its vernacular and what was seen as a crude writing style all around. It had its troubles at first but it wasn’t until the 20th century that it garnered a large amount of criticism for what people considered its racial stereotypes. Though it’s banned in certain schools (even to this day), the novel is often names as one of America’s Greatest novels. But what if it had…robots?

That’s where creators Gabriel Diani and Etta Devine come in. Much like Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Diani and Devine added a modern term into a classic piece of fiction. But Diani and Devine had a very particular goal. They didn’t just want to add zombies to Huckleberry Finn and create an alternate world, they wanted to make a point of it. So they replaced every instance of the “n-word” or “slave” with “robot,” to rather interesting effect. Hence, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Robotic Edition was born. Read on for our interview with Diani and Devine where they discuss their approach to the project, challenges, and why censorship is a bad idea.

Doctor Who‘s On Location New York Shoot Continues… Without Us [Pics]

The last time the Doctor visited New York City, it turned out to be one of the most missable episodes of the new series, although it did have Andrew Garfield in it (now there’s a crossover opportunity). But this time the Doctor is going to avoid all the drama entirely by having a nice picnic, complete with one of those upscale picnic baskets with the strapped in plates. I’m sure nothing bad will happen.

Of course what this means is that the cast of Doctor Who is just, like, walking around New York, and I’m sitting here in the office typing.

The weekend is upon us, it might rain (at least in the New York tri-state area), and some of us will be stuck for nothing to do. Except for these Doctor Who crafts from the 1980s, which are just as mint as you might imagine. We’ll tease you with this: TARDIS. Sleeping. Bag.

[UPDATED] Planned Parenthood Wants You to “Check In” on Foursquare Every Time You Use a Condom

A regional chapter of Planned Parenthood, god bless them, is running a promotion that asks responsible young men to “check in” on Foursquare every time they practice safe sex, so they can proclaim, “I am wrapped up and proud!” But, um, what about the people with whom these fine young men are practicing the safe sex? I guess “a gentleman never kisses and tells” is not a thing anymore?

Tons of People at Gallifrey One Including One Doctor, One Companion, and One Mythbuster [Video]

Did you miss the Gallifrey One convention that took place in Los Angeles last weekend? Were you wondering who might have been there, how many people came dressed as one of the 11 versions of the Doctor, if there were rogue daleks roaming about? Well, wonder no more. Athena Stamos has this excellent roundup of interviews for Crave Online from various people involved with Doctor Who seasons past and present, including 8th Doctor Paul McGann, former companion of the 4th Doctor Louise Jameson, Mark Sheppard, and a whole slew of folks who just really like Doctor Who, including John DeLancie, better known as Q on Star Trek: The Next Generation, who is asked about the IDW crossover, Eric Roberts, who played the Master and is asked about The Dark Knight Rises, and Mythbuster Grant Imahara!

Via Brad Hansen (The Lion King Rises), who also shot and edited the video. Thanks, Brad!

Mary Poppins, A Timelord?

You might not think that Mary Poppins showing up on Google Streetview might necessarily indicate that she’s a millennia old Gallifreyan traveller, but just read fireflyastoria’s compelling argument below. (Hint: this is a Google Streetview view of Cardiff, Wales.)

Doctor Who Commenced Filming Yesterday, and We Have Some Pictures to Show You (From the Future)

It’s always nice to know that the things you’ve been anticipating are actually materializing (like they’re supposed to, according to The Secret), and yesterday, the cast and crew of Doctor Who finally got back together to start shooting the seventh season. While there is pretty much zero context for the pictures that were released, isn’t it just comfy to know that Rory (Arthur Darvill) and Amy (Karen Gillan) are about to go on some new adventures (that will probably make us cry)? In addition to pictures, we also found out about a very fun — and equally British-franchise-friendly — guest star.

That Time Douglas Adams got Monty Python on Doctor Who

Well, maybe he didn’t get all of Monty Python on the show, but he did get John Cleese. City of Death was written by David Fisher, but heavily re-written by none other than then-script-editor Douglas Adams. When Adams learned that John Cleese would be filming in the same studio on the same day, he persuaded the actor to come in and cameo as a speaking part written for generic art gallery goers. Cleese agreed, on the requirement that his appearance on the show not be announced or publicized in any way, leaving it a bizarre non-sequitur that any Python fan would appreciate.
