Mattias Adolfsson Goes for Baroque With His Star Wars Fan Art

Whither all my Star Wars/art history nerds? Swedish artist Mattias Adolfsson has mashed up a galaxy far, far away and the baroque style of art to stunning effect. Half the characters are wearing barrister’s wigs, the Death Star is classy and made of wood, and Boba Fett’s jetpack is a miniature hot air balloon. What’s not to love?

(I would just like to say, for the record, that I am not sorry for the awful pun in the title. Not one little bit.)

Hobbit Downey, Jr.

Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist… I suppose Bilbo lived up to two of those by the end of his life, but if this guy’s One Ring is an arc reactor, I think it’s going to be pretty tricky to get him to give it to his nephew.

Cinderella Remake Director Too Grimm for Disney

I tend to get a little cynical when it comes to fairy tale remakes, just because they’re everywhere and I’m sick of them. But there was one I was really looking forward to: Disney’s live-action Cinderella remake, because Cate Blanchett is going to be the evil stepmother and Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go, One Hour Photo) was going to direct, and how can I resist that?

Except now Romanek’s gone, reportedly because Disney thought his take on the material was too dark. What, was he trying to do an accurate-to-the-original-story version or something? Complete with chopped-off toes and pecked-out eyes?

Game of Thrones Gets Gorey With These ABCs of Death

Even if you’ve neither read nor watched Game of Thrones, you probably know there’s a lot of death in it. A whole alphabet’s worth and then some, in fact. DeviantArtist Curtana has illustrated the dear (and sometimes not so dear) departed of Westeros and beyond in the style of Edward Gorey’s Gashlycrumb Tinies with this Game of Thrones alphabet. Beyond the jump you’ll find some not-spoilery panels (if you’ve watched season one or read the first book, you’ll be fine). You can head to Curtana’s DeviantArt page to experience the entire series in all its rhyming glory, but if you’ve not yet read all the books I’d avoid it like Sandor avoids fire lest ye be spoiled.

This Rocking Chair Will Knit a Nice, Warm Hat For You While You Chill [VIDEO]

ECAL Low-Tech Factory/Rocking-Knit from ECAL on Vimeo.

This rocking chair, designed by University of Art and Design Lausanne students Damien Ludi and Colin Peillex, can also knit hats. Beanies, specifically. The rocking motion of the chair activates a knitting mechanism at the top, which uses gears to… look, the design specifics aren’t that important here. Just watch the video. It’s mesmerizing. Also, Bill Murray approves.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Villain Will be Electro, Might be Played by Jamie Foxx

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 might be getting Foxxier. It’s been confirmed that the villain in the Marc Webb-directed superhero sequel, slated for release in 2014, will be Electro, and Variety reported yesterday that Jamie Foxx is in early talks to play him.

Foxx has yet to officially join the cast, though a Tweet he posted yesterday (“Dressed up as Electro for Halloween last night. Costume fits well.”) confirms at the very least that he’s interested in playing Electro, legal name Max Dillon, an electrical engineer who was transformed into a living electrical capacitor by a freak lightning strike.

George Lucas On the Future of Star Wars

George Lucas sits down with LucasFilm Co-Chairman Kathleen Kennedy and PR director Lynne Hale to discuss what the future holds for the beloved franchise that he created and then subsequently screwed up. What? I’m not bitter about the prequels! Why would you say that?. As a lifelong Star Wars fan, my feelings about yesterday’s news are pretty muddled and not all positive. But watching this video has left me with, dare I say it… a new hope?

Sorry, sorry. No more bad puns today. I swear.

Dinosaurs Developed Feathers to Pick Up Chicks, Not Fly

We already knew that Dr. Grant was right in thinking that dinosaurs evolved into birds. But recent discoveries indicate that dinosaurs developed wings much earlier than previously thought, and that these early wings weren’t used for flying, but for attracting mates. So kind of like peacocks, then. Deadly, deadly peacocks.
