May The Horse Be With You: A Star Wars/My Little Pony Mash-Up [VIDEO]

I’ve had to create a new tag here on The Mary Sue, “Pony Mash-Up,” because these are coming at us fast and furious these days and are too great not to share. Today, a Star Wars/My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic short written, directed, edited, and animated by Jacob Kitts. Hit the jump to watch the video, it’s everything you’d expect it to be…and more.

The Super Mario Bros. Parody of “Video Games” We’ve Been Waiting to Happen Is Here! [Video]

Surely Lana Del Rey should have seen this coming: parodies of her song “Video Games” that involve people singing about video games. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! And Jenny Bede has imagined this super sullen tale about how Princess Peach married the wrong Mario Brother (both of whom are played by Brendan Murphy) and is so sad that she just plays video games to get through life. That Peach is soooo meta.

The Animated Alphabet Of Films [VIDEO]

Well isn’t this clever? Vimeo user Evan Seitz created a montage of animations depicting films starting with each letter of the alphabet. He calls it ABCinema. It would have been even more challenging had he picked quotes from each film that started with those letters but at least this way we get some more recognizable ones. Try and name them all but hit the jump for the cheat sheet list of films.

Volkswagen’s Star Wars Super Bowl Commercial is Here; Has Almost Nothing to do With Star Wars

Looks like ‘wagen completely buckled under the pressure of coming up with a Super Bowl ad on the level of catchiness of last year’s offering, so they decided to do something kinda ‘eh’ and tangentially tie the two together, attempting to ride on the coattails of their past success. I wonder how many people are going to watch this on game day, having never seen last year’s commercial, and have no idea what they are looking at.

Alternatively, they could have remade the commercial with an adorable version of another famous character, and given it a twist ending. Ah well.

Life as A Hula Hoop

YouTuber theoriginalhelski made this video made by attaching a camera to the inside of a hula hoop, and it’s pretty entrancing… we’re just glad we didn’t watch it on a full stomach.

Also the glutton for punishment in us is really curious what it looks like at full speed. If you’re prepared to watch it, or interested in how it got done, venture forth, brave reader.

Ohhhh, I Guess They Had What She Had [VIDEO]

Earlier this week we showed you vimeo user Matthijs Vlot’s (aka ant1mat3rie) meticulous rendering of Lionel Richie’s Hello using movie clips. Today, he’s got something a bit simpler, a bit more specific, and yes, a bit dirtier. I’d suggest headphones if you’re at work.

Google May Unveil Its Rival to Siri by the End of the Year

Siri is about to meet her competition — at least that’s what reports are saying about Google‘s next incarnation of its Voice Actions feature for Droid phones. While the assistant doesn’t have a name yet, engineers have codenamed her Majel, after Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry who provided the voice of the show’s Federation Computer. Which is kind of appropriate, especially if Google is trying to attract more nerds to their phones. But while some have used the term “this year” to describe Majel’s release date, that only leaves about three weeks until the actual release. So, probably not this year, but early next year? Maybe Siri knows …

Akira Looks to Hire Its First Non-White Actor: Ken Watanabe

It’s sad to say, but movies studios that do not use the opportunities that lie before them to cast non-white actors in roles that would be great opportunities for non-white actors to play the sorts of roles that are rarely open to them do not surprise me. I’m much more likely to blink in astonishment and delight when studios hire non-white actors to play characters who, had they just hired a white actor, no one would have otherwise blinked at. See Thor and the upcoming Man of Steel. We need a word for when you are pleasantly surprised simply because your expectations were so low.

No, what really surprises me about the Akira casting is that every step the studio makes appears to be perfectly calculated to reinforce the idea that maintaining any ties to the integral cultural setting of Akira is absolutely last on the list of priorities. However, finally, the production appears to be courting it’s first non-white actor, and Ken Watanabe is not only actually Asian, but actually Japanese, a distinction of nationality that I don’t have high hopes for Hollywood ever getting through its head.

Barnes & Noble Say Goodbye To DC, Welcomes Alan Moore

You probably remember the big kerfuffle from a few weeks ago, the one where Barnes & Noble decided to pull all DC Comics graphic novels from their physical store shelves in response to the publisher’s exclusive deal with Amazon and their Kindle Fire. Even though DC later said the exclusive deal wasn’t as exclusive as previously thought, that didn’t change anything for B&N. Now, the bookstore chain has decided to refill its shelves with Alan Moore comics. “But, hasn’t Moore done a lot of work for DC,” you ask? Yes, that may be why they are stocking their stores with the writer’s work from publisher 2000 AD instead.

Hasbro Says the Ouija Board Movie Is “Not Dead,” Probably Consulted Ouija Board First

The CEO of Hasbro, Brian Goldner, has some updates on the movies being made out of the toys produced by his company. We’ll gloss over the Transformers 4 news for the moment, because what we’re really interested in is the Ouija Board movie and what’s happening with that. Last we heard, Universal said “No” to what was intended to be a supernatural family flick. But Goldner claims that the project is still in the works, just trying to cut the budget. In other words, it’s “not dead.” Get it? Haha, Ouija Board humor! In other news, someone asked a toy company about movie news.
