BuzzFeed Swaps Actresses for Actors in Sexist Commercials

BuzzFeed’s closing line on this is “seeing men like this is ridiculous, so why isn’t it with women?” and I can appreciate that as a beginning educational standpoint for folks out there who’ve never considered the roles that male and female bodies and stereotypes play in advertising. But frankly, I think all sides look ridiculous in this video, both in the original and remade ads. And I would like to take a stand, now, for a future where all people have an equal opportunity to be the ridiculous Dorito seducer, the ridiculous sports fan, the ridiculous supermodel, the ridiculous nerd, and the ridiculous burger-eating-on-a-beach-sexy-person, regardless of what genfer they identify with.

Paul Dini Wants Female Fans to Read Black Canary/Zatanna OGN

Paul Dini has been pretty outspokenly pro-female fans in the past, even in the face of direct opposition.  He’s also well-known for writing a lot of female characters that do well with female fans, such as Harley Quinn and Catwoman.  But Dini admits that many female fans of comics characters were made fans by other media outside of comics because of the success of shows like Batman: The Animated Series.  It is those fans that he hopes to attract with the upcoming Black Canary and Zatanna: Bloodspell original graphic novel with artist Joe Quinones.

The Internet Has Done It: We’ve Found the Dumbest Hunger Games Tie In

I genuinely enjoy the sense of cognitive dissonance that most Hunger Games tie-ins elicit: the casting of the viewer and the advertiser as citizens of the hated, shallow Capitol reminds us that even as real viewers sympathetic to the fictional Katniss, we’re still deriving entertainment value from her on-screen suffering, much like the fictional citizens of the Capitol, and that’s an interesting little knot of art theory to untangle.

But even I’ve got to admit this particular tie-in makes no freakin’ sense.
