J.K. Rowling Sues the Daily Mail for Libel

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is suing the Daily Mail for libel after they published an article in September titled “How JK Rowling’s sob story about her past as a single mother has left the churchgoers who cared for her upset and bewildered” online and “How JK Rowling’s sob story about her single mother past has surprised and confused the church members who cared for her” in print. The article related to a recent piece Rowling had written for a charity website about the struggles faced by single parents.  This case comes at an interesting time legally, as libel laws in the UK have recently changed.

Well, I’d think anybody would have some trouble going back to work after a prison sentence, but -

It’s Never Too Late For Awesome Harry Potter Covers

No offense to Mary GrandPre, but these Swedish Harry Potter covers by Alvaro Tapia are just stunning. Though I could see myself as a kid being turned off by his Order the Phoenix illustration. Jesus Christ on a cracker, those Thestrals are scary.

And OK, sure, these covers aren’t exactly new. But there is no new Harry Potter stuff, so we work with what we have. You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have the facts of life.

The Book Would Been a Lot Quicker if Mad-Eye Moody Had Had This Flask

I admit I was a little disappointed to find that this flask is embellished with a decal, not engraved, but the price is right and I can’t say that I wouldn’t enjoy taking very suspicious and noticeable swigs from it periodically throughout the day.

(Yes, Potterheads, I know that it wasn’t Mad Eye Moody swigging Polyjuice Potion all day, it was Barty Crouch, Jr., but if I’d put that in the title at least one person would be right now accusing me of spoiling something that happened thirteen years ago.)

Harry Potter and the Custom Quidditch Kit Marriage Proposal

Rachel was introduced to Harry Potter by her girlfriend, Jaquie, so she knew that when she wanted to pop the question, she’d be doing it in a certain style. You can read the story of the proposal over at Custom Made, but click on for more pictures of the set.

State of the Union Address Left out the Bit Where We’re Getting New Harry Potter Cover Art

Now, don’t get your howler stationary out just yet. Kazu Kibuishi‘s lovely illustrations aren’t going to be replacing Mary GrandPré‘s iconic dust jackets on the US hardcover editions of the Harry Potter books. They’re going on the 15th anniversary paperbacks, which will begin their release with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone this fall. Which I note is still going to be called “Sorcerer” and not “Philosopher” because sigh.

Said Kibuishi of the opportunity to illustrate Harry Potter:
