Tao Porchon-Lynch, 93, Is the World’s Oldest Yoga Teacher

When Tao Porchon-Lynch was a younger woman, she won contests for her shapely legs. Now, at age 93, she’s been using those legs — and arms, and back, and abs — to bend herself into yoga poses that make people decades younger than her gasp in admiration. Her yoga journey began 45 years ago, later in life than most people who pursue it, but after finding herself loving the poses and the culture, she suck with it and share it with others. Her dedication has now earned her the title of the world’s oldest yoga teacher by Guinness World Records.

Comic Superheroines Grace Retro Magazine Covers

Pop artist Des Taylor has a collection of the bossest covers of Live Magazine, which doesn’t exist, but maybe it exists in Metropolis. Or at least a world in which all of comic book culture’s superheroes and superheroines are real. And in that world, their stories are the ones that make the covers of the most popular magazines, retro-style. After the jump, see Taylor’s pinup inspired covers, and then picture all the citizens of Spider-Man’s New York reading them on park benches.

Monday Cute: The Only Way to Stop a Battle Between Supergirl and Superman Is a Super Mom

Okay, so I might have given away the ending gag in the title, but the best gag in the short also features someone’s end, and I haven’t given it away yet, so you should probably just watch the short before I loose my composure.

Enjoy a Sneak Peek of This Weekend’s Super Best Friends Forever, Featuring Supergirl and a Super Special Guest

While I’m primarily a Batman fan, each of the girls Super Best Friends Forever have walked straight into my heart and set up shop. Batgirl, for being the adorable nerdy fangirl of the group, Wonder Girl for basically being a female Samurai Jack, and Supergirl as soon as she suggested, with a throwing up of The Horns and a bit of an electric guitar riff, that Lex Luthor’s secret lair could use a good TP-ing. And speaking of Supergirl, she’s the one girl we haven’t seen get a short centered on her yet. I mean, it’s not surprising, there have only been two shorts so far, centered on the home life of Wonder Girl and Batgirl, so logically the third one would focus on Supergirl.

But I still squeed a bit when I saw this preview. I mean, come on. Listen to this evil laugh.

Brenda Starr Wins a Pulitzer Prize… Well, Okay Her Writer Did

Yesterday, we brought you the news of Sara Ganim, who at 24 is now one of the youngest writers to ever receive a Pulitzer, an award garnered for her exposure of the sex abused scandal at her alma mater Penn State. But what did we see this morning but another Pulitzer award given to someone relevant to our interests: Mary Schmich, a comic writing lady.

Mary Schmich, in case you were wondering, wrote the newspaper strip Brenda Starr for more than a quarter of a century, making her responsible for nearly a third of its entire run, and its finale in 2011.

How To Get People To Pay $25,000 for a $400 Check: Invent Superman

Last year a pretty amazing piece of comics history surfaced from who knows where: the original check that publisher and accountant Jack Liebowitz used to pay Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster $130 when they signed over all rights to their new character Superman to Detective Comics Inc. The small piece of paper bears the signatures of Liebowitz, Siegel, and Shuster; as well as an ominous stamp from the U.S. District Court of New York dated April 6th, 1939, from when it was entered as evidence in Detective Comics, Inc. v. Bruns Publications, the first of a number of legal battles over who deserves compensation for the success of Superman that is still ongoing.

The check surfaced last year, around October, but this weekend it, like most ancient comic book memorabilia, went up for auction, and the bidding has climbed to $25,500 as of yesterday afternoon.
