That Young Wonder Woman TV Show Is Being “Redeveloped”

When we first heard there was going to be another attempt at a Wonder Woman television show after the failed attempt that was David E. Kelley’s pilot, we were shocked. We got as far as character descriptions and even a few actors’ names being thrown in the ring to play Princess Diana but then came a pause, one we hoped didn’t mean the end of the project. Thankfully, we can now report the series, titled Amazon, is still being worked on.

You Can Watch Wonder Women! The Untold Story Of American Superheroines On Your Own TV Tonight

Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines is a meditation on the history of the female hero in modern American culture told through the changing interpretation and representation of the character of Wonder Woman, and if that doesn’t already sucker you in to watching it, then maybe the fact that it’s being lauded from all corners, including the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in the Media, will.

It’s an independent documentary film, so screenings in your area might have been thin on the ground. The good news is the movie has become part of PBS’ Indepedent Lens series, which runs a new independent film every Monday night. Wonder Women! airs tonight at 10 pm, though you probably want to check your local PBS listings. Afterwards, if you just can’t get enough of discussion about female characters and gender representation in media, you might want to check out this panel discussion that followed a screening of the film in Los Angeles a few weeks ago. It included folks from the Geena Davis Institute, the LA Times, and our contributing writer Zoe Chevat. An upcoming Wonder Women! panel in New York will feature yours truly, so stay tuned for info on that as well!

Wonder Woman Strikes A Pose On This Fake Justice Magazine Cover

Artist Stanley Lau, aka artgerm, shows how a superheroine can look sexy and strong at the same time without having to show both her breasts and butt at the same time. I’d buy this.

Check Out These Fully Clothed Superheroine Redesigns

Michael Lee gave himself a design challenge recently: redesign several popular comic book heroines (Vampirella is included, so I guess they’re not all superheroes in the classic sense) but keep them covered from toe to neck and wrist to wrist, without resorting to costumes that could be reproduced solely by body paint, while keeping the bold look of their standard costume. He intended it as a design experiment, not a political statement, and if he’d done it with male superheroes probably most people would be taking those words at face value. And it also wouldn’t have been much of a challenge since most male superheros are, actually, wearing clothing that covers them head to toe. The story isn’t the same for female characters, though, and so naturally there’s a healthy amount of internet response that’s a little tone deaf, calling his designs frumpy, like men in drag, or prudish.

All I know is that there are few things in the world that make me feel more badass than wearing a nice-fitting suit and a long coat.

Nathan Fillion Is Hermes In The New Percy Jackson Movie

Ok, so I didn’t see the first Percy Jackson movie but Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters might have piqued my interest. And not just because Nathan Fillion and Glimmer (Leven Rambin) and Caesar (Stanley Tucci) from The Hunger Games are in it. Ok, mostly that.

Here’s the Weird 1967 Pilot for a Wonder Woman Show From the Creators of 1966′s Batman

Complete with a worried mother, a weird dig at Wonder Woman’s… ego, I guess, and a nearly entire minute long shot of Diana mugging for herself in the mirror… there’s a place where things that might seem a product of old-timey sexism just come off as weird non sequiturs, and this is it. Gaze in bemusement, everybody. And read more about this pilot over at Neatorama.

Why Wonder Woman Should Carry a Scrunchie Around

Kevin Warren drew this as an illustration of some tweets by comics journalist Chris Sims, which you can read here. Because a female fighter pointedly putting her hair up should have the same cinematic caché as a scientist pointedly taking his glasses off. It’s the opposite of the Samurai Jack effect, where when his hair came out of his ponytail, you know that shit just got real.
