Ancient Mayan Murals Reveal That the World Isn’t Ending This Year After All!

One of the biggest raves ever is coming on December 21, 2012 — at least according to the beloved tin-foil hat faction of the human race. Apparently, a calendar designed by the Mayans predicted that the end of the world was coming on that very date just seven months from now, and some people just decided to run with it and take it as 100 percent truth. But now, markings on newly discovered, 1,200-year-old Mayan murals that have just been unearthed in Xultún, Guatemala might fly right in the face of all those bummer doomsday predictions. In fact, they are being interpreted as a sign that we have many more millennia ahead of us — so, yes! Mayan science fiction means that the Earth will survive to see a sequel to The Avengers. This is a glorious find, indeed!

Adventure Time‘s Marceline Gets Her Own Comicbook Spinoff, by the Creator of Octopus Pie

Marceline the Vampire Queen is one of the radder characters (if I may say so myself) of Pendleton Ward‘s Adventure Time… I mean, the show has a great extended cast of some pretty awesome princesses like Princess Bubblegum and Lumpy Space Princess, but Marceline… well. She’s a queen.

Boom! Studios is in charge of the Adventure Time comics, and frankly I’m in love with the way they’re putting them together, by hiring not from the paper comics establishment but getting Ryan North of Dinosaur Comics to write (Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb are drawing). It’s paid off, with the comic going to multiple printings. Boom! announced yesterday that they’d be playing on that success with by giving Marceline (and Princess Bubblegum) their own comic miniseries starting this July. And not only are we getting a comic about Adventure Time‘s infamous are-they-saying-what-I-think-they’re-saying? lady couple, it’s going to be written by the internet’s own Meredith Gran, of Octopus Pie. Here are some of the awesome covers for the series, by awesome ladies:

According to Scientists, Lab Coats Make You Smarter

According to a new study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, wearing a lab coat can actually make you better at solving problems. Authors Hajo Adam and Adam Galinsky wanted to explore that nature of what they call “enclothed cognition,” the effect that the clothes we are wearing have on our psychology, through both the physical feeling of wearing them and the social meaning that we associate with those clothes.

To that end, they made a bunch of people dress up in white coats.

Finally: The World Gets a Trailer for Mass Effect 3 Featuring a Female Commander Shepard

One of the things Bioware promised when they announced that for the first time, the oncoming media blitz for a Mass Effect game would include a female version of the customizable main character as well as the default male. This also meant that they would produce a trailer for the game featuring a female version of the player character, for the vocal minority of their fans who loved taking a role written to be gender neutral (and animated to be masculine) and playing through it as a lady. And while the trailer was supposed to have gone up last summer, we’re happy to see it now.

Players of Mass Effect who enjoy a run through as the female version of the civilization-saving Commander Shepard might balk at first: it’s always strange to see a Shepard who doesn’t look like the Shepard you created, but if you give this long awaited trailer a few seconds chance, voice actress Jennifer Hale will start talking and then you’ll be unable to look away.

Icelandic Web Site Helps Icelanders Find Out If They Are Committing Incest

While it has produced the larger-than-life personality of Björk, Iceland is not a very big country. With a population of just 300,000 people, a common problem when two people decide to pursue a romantic relationship is how closely related they might be to each other. And not like “What if our ancestors had sex on the Mayflower?” More like, “What if our great-grandparents are the same?” Okay, that’s an exaggeration. But, apparently, it’s not that unusual to find yourself dating your own third or fourth cousin, and some Icelanders are finding that a bit too close for comfort. But now, Íslendingabók is here to help the people of Iceland stop themselves from becoming the next accidental Lannisters!

Super Bowl Video Roundup: The Avengers, Fat Dogs, Squeaky Porcupines

There’s a certain groundhog who likes to make predictions about the wether and then cover his tracks by saying that “it was winter somewhere.” He’s got nothing on everyone’s favorite squeaky porcupine, who predicted last night’s Giants victory over the Patriots a week ago.

But I’d hazard a guess that the majority of you aren’t terrifically interested in the game itself, and are more into the stuff that happened in the all-too few commercial breaks in this unusually quick Super Bowl game. Worry not, we’ve got two different versions of the Avengers spot, Star Wars, and Matthew Broderick below.

Corsets: Not Anatomical Torture Machines After All

It’s been a joke amongst women for ages: the corset. That evil, constricting, painful thing we used to cinch our waists into nothing, all for the sake of attaining an impossible, ideal figure to attract (or keep) a husband. O, how it crushed our organs! O, those poor women who surgically removed their ribs to get into these things! O, why is there no male equivalent! O, we have to wear heels, too? Well, there is relief on the horizon for our sisters of centuries and decades past, for as it turns out, a lot of these beliefs about corsets being this horrifically terrible are somewhat exaggerated.
